FR Folding@Home Project Update - Sony Playstation 3 Makes Its Debut!
Fox News Technology ^ | 03/23/2007 | LOU KESTEN, Associated Press Writer

_INTO THE FOLD: Despite all the criticism the PlayStation 3 has received, everyone acknowledges it's a powerful piece of hardware. Scientists at Stanford University want to harness that power while you're not using it to play "Virtual Fighter."

The researchers are studying the folding and misfolding of proteins, processes that may lead to diseases such as Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and many kinds of cancer. It requires a lot of computing power to simulate the processes, so the Folding@home program has set up a global network of computers to handle the calculations.

By the end of this month, Internet-connected PS3 owners will be able to donate time on their machines to the Folding@home project. It's the first "distributed computing" project to take advantage of the PS3's zippy Cell processor, and Sony promises it won't be the last.

If you are running the GUI version of F@H, then you will see a little red flower in the system tray. Right click, go to properties and you will be able to adjust the CPU usage with the slider bar in one of the tabs. Drop it down to 75% or 85%.

If you have the console version we have a bit more work to do. You will need to stop the service, then adjust the properties from a command line.

If you have the console version then FReepmail me.

Wow. 2ch@PS3 is comprised of about 300 - 350 PS3s (so far). The biggest user has 220 PS3s lined up for him.

Maybe a gaming salon, or some guy that loads F@H on every PS3 that goes out of his store.

Not bad when your first major update is about 1 million points!

Welcome..."folding" can be infectious, as you watch your standing on the list. Soon you will be thinkin' about how you can add a new 'puter to your effort so you can climb ahead of another FReeper. Perhaps your 'puter at work, your in-laws, or borg a friends computer.

Hey, the updated home page looks great! Just remember to update every now and then as you advance up the charts.

Nerd, you can change the name of your one folding machine to nerdwithamachinegun and just orphan those points. You'll enjoy having a few systems pop in points on a regular basis.

I don't get to run my PS3 a lot (it's a furnace!) but I'm going to try to leave my peeeeceeeee running more.

I can't change the short (nerdwithamachine) as it is my PS3.
They capped the string length.

That was a complaint heard very fast on the forum. Only 16 characters for a user name.

It may be fixed in the future but don't bet the mortgage on it.

We are still talking about Sony, ya' know.

Thanks for joining the team, and adding your work with ours.

Your home page is ... interesting. Did you have anything to do with the manufacture of that gun, or did you adopt it?

I'd like to thank "ProsecuteBushCheney" for joining the team and contributing points to our cause. If a thousand other wackos join up, we will be the number one team. Remember, "fold" one for the Gipper!

I tried every combination I could think of to find PBC's FReeper name but couldn't find one.

I guess that DU must still have a team going. I haven't even looked in months.

Eleven regular contributors who are over or near 1,000 ppd.

Now if the energy nazis ever let Klutz update his systems over spring break, we would be pulling in some points!

It's good times...We are "folding" with a lot of new members, and they bring a welcome amount of points. Perhaps it's cause of the sad cancer news in the papers recently, but whatever the reason, everyone is welcome and even the slowest 'puter helps.

I sorta like watching the "unofficial" non-battle between two new members, td911 and LanPB01 as they surge up the charts. May the best 'folder" win.

You were with us a short time and pulled some impressive points, but you've seemed to have dropped out? Anything we can do to assist?

Thank you "EndBushWarProfiteering" for folding for the Gipper. If you have any more friends at DU, please encourage them to fold for us also.

Here's a link to their EOC team page. They seem to be steadily dropping. I would think they would be better served by folding for their own team, than to give us points through childish pranks.

Oh wait, these ARE the DUmmies......
