Man's body found stuck in store ceiling
Star-Telegram ^ | 3-22-07 | BILL MILLER

Posted on 03/22/2007 10:54:37 AM PDT by Dysart

The body of a young man, whose legs were found Thursday morning dangling from a vent hood in the ceiling of a Dallas convenience store, appears to have suffocated while trying to enter the store from the roof, police said.

The discovery was made by an employee of the Express Mart in the 7400 block of Harry Hines Boulevard, said Senior Cpl. Janice Crowther, police spokeswoman. The neighborhood is between Interstate 35E, also known as Stemmons Freeway, and Dallas Love Field airport in northwest Dallas.

"We know the lady closed the store at 10 o’clock last night, and then opened it again at 9:25 a.m.,’" Crowther said. "When she walked in she found the lower portion of the man’s body, his legs, hanging from the vent hood in the ceiling above her grill.

"It appears the man attempted to enter building from the roof, and it appears he suffocated."

But, Crowther noted, the Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the exact cause of death. Meanwhile, she added, investigators must try to learn the man’s identity because he didn’t have any identification.

The victim appeared to be a Latin male in his late teens or early 20s, Crowther said.

"It took the fire department quite a while to get him out of there,’" Crowther said. "They had to cut through the roof and the vent hood with special tools and then they had to pull him up back through the roof."

Growing up--dreaming who he might become one day and where life's twists and turns(sorry) may lead him--I bet our hero here never imagined that he'd go out like this.

But you likely could find one of his teachers who wouldn't be surprised.

Sounds like a wrongful death lawsuit - they should have installed a vent large enough that it wouldn't have posed such a hazard. (/sarcasm)

Any lawyers already on the case? Can't let people get away with death traps for burglars on their roof.

He: Wait a minute. Your sign says, "Open 24 hours".
She: Not in a row!

Heartless bastards! At least a source of oxygen and an emergency supply of water are required in such situations.

If there going to have openings on the roof, it is only right to assume that someone will eschew the normal entrance and attempt other means of entry in order to enjoy the promise of a better life inside.

Or cold remedies for making crack. Or maybe steal an ATM machine. Heck, the possibilities are endless.
