Why Saint Patrick's Day?

Saint Patrick's Day has come to be associated with everything Irish: anything green and gold, shamrocks and luck. Most importantly, to those who celebrate its intended meaning, St. Patrick's Day is a traditional day for spiritual renewal and offering prayers for missionaries worldwide.

So, why is it celebrated on March 17th? One theory is that that is the day that St. Patrick died. Since the holiday began in Ireland, it is believed that as the Irish spread out around the world, they took with them their history and celebrations. The biggest observance of all is, of course, in Ireland. With the exception of restaurants and pubs, almost all businesses close on March 17th. Being a religious holiday as well, many Irish attend mass, where March 17th is the traditional day for offering prayers for missionaries worldwide before the serious celebrating begins.

In American cities with a large Irish population, St. Patrick's Day is a very big deal. Big cities and small towns alike celebrate with parades, "wearing of the green," music and songs, Irish food and drink, and activities for kids such as crafts, coloring and games. Some communities even go so far as to dye rivers or streams green!

I think that is fair but when piping hot it does have sligthly more flavour than when cold or luke warm.

Toad in the hole is great which is batter (Yorkshire) pudding and sausages and for a vegetarian you can use vegetarian sausages.

Lovely served with brown sauce for example A1 or if a Brit HP Sauce.

Are you going to get her to a vet? It's horrible when they aren't feeling well.

I am going to try to check in out myself. I have removed thorns - in every case a long hawthorn - 5 times from my dogs & my friends dogs paws. they have to let you touch/examine paw though. I can tell there is NO cut in pads.. which is common & causes much bleeding. I am thinking of giving her an aspirin in morning & perhaps a soak in salts prior to checking it out.

HP Sauce?

As in the famous British steak sauce?

I thought they stopped making that in Britain--IIRC, Heinz was moving all of its production to Holland.

It is not made by Heinz it is made Danone. Their website is

www.hpfoods.com

The address shown on the bottle is Birmingham but where it is made not sure.

I would not call it a steak sauce we normally eat it with bacon and sausages when we have a full English breakfast or with something like toad in the hole or sausage and mash at dinner. The taste is similar to A1 but thicker.

interesting, because over here, we usually slather 'em up ketchup, mustard, relish, onion etc.

Italians, Polish (incl. Kielbasa), Bratwurst, and weenies are often treated this way.

Well, if you're a Chicago purist, you don't put ketchup on your sausage...

You are right it is now owned by Heinz my bottle does not show that though it shows Danone I suspect that Danone have sold HP food off to Heinz.

As the major ingredient is malt vinegar a long time. If you only eat it ocassionally probably best to keep in the fridge after you have opened the bottle.

I know dad has a bottle on the table for the last 6 weeks and that is perfectly fresh.

We mainly only put English or French/German mustard on steak or maybe a pepper sauce but certainly not brown sauce or ketchup.

Dad has a bit of stomach upset (that is why I am still about) so I doubt I will be going into work that early tomorrow but I had better get a couple of hours now.

Night
