March 13, 2007, Tuesday, CINCH
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of word for the day. Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the word of the day; in a sentence. The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. Practice makes perfect.....post on....
Subbie Slip has her whip, handcuffs and legcuffs today. Tomorrow Im bringing in chains, so beware.
The rest of the stuff is locked up in my drawer. Im just letting all the new students know that we behave as if we were ladies and gentlemen in here. Those two words as if can get you an A if you make the subbie laugh.
Pronunciation: sinch
Function: noun
Etymology: Spanish cincha, from Latin cingula girdle, girth, from cingere more at cincture
Date: 1859
1: a girth for a pack or saddle
2: a tight grip
3 a: a thing done with ease b: a certainty to happen (it's a cinch he'll break the record)
Function: verb
Date: 1866
transitive verb
1 a: to put a cinch on b: to fasten (as a belt or strap) tightly
2: to make certain : assure (the goal that cinched the victory
intransitive verb
1: to tighten the cinch often used with up
I think they forgot another meaning: girdle. Well, cinching yourself up to get a 19-inch waist, I suppose is cinching.
RULES: You must use the WFTD in a sentence for an A. For a + after your A, you must bring in a link of the word usage or something funny, a poem or some prose that will elucidate the word for us.
If you need to know how to link, come to the Subbies desk in the front of the class.
See you in MY morning. LOL!
Good morning, Slip.
Posting this should be a cinch, since I'm in the top 10 (also that I just got my DSL reinstalled -- grrr!).
A sentence with this word is a cinch. But now I have to cinch several other posts together, cinch I have been working on different topics.
Thank God the fanny pack is no longer cool. Sometimes they look like a cinch for the wearers massive quantity of adipose.
Today's word for the day ought to be a cinch... like the Red Sox winning a World Series this year.
Getting used to the time change is not a cinch. I hate getting up at dark thirty.
Good Morning!
I must be eating like a horse lately. It's been difficult getting my belt to fasten.
That's a cinch.
Broad-belted girdles a cinch,
Tightened down snug with a winch,
Hillary in full bloom,
Sure fills out the room,
She'll make sure Barack will flinch!
Lots of hardware, but do you have a lead-pipe cinch in there?
Cinch Mrs Clinton always wears a pantsuit with overlapping jacket, it's a sure thong we'll never see the size of her belt...
(Whyisatexasgirlwearingouthermarinesbeltbucketintexas?)
Yo hobby!
Her supporters think Hillary's a cinch
Three primaries, then she will clinch
But before this abomination
Gets the dem nomination
There's a few guys she will verbally lynch
What is a "belt bucket", darling?
Ya, and someone needs to cinch her flapping lips!
That, er, uhm, uh "hollow spot" under a Texas-sized belt buckle?
