Sorry for the late start. Mrs. Chairman and I were in New York yesterday for the Chinese New Year parade and celebration (New Year was actually last Sunday, however), and the Acela Express got back a little late (wasn't the biggest factor, only 15 minutes). We were a tad late getting going this morning. :)

Well, we're back from Myrtle Beach and successfully completed our first 1/2 Marathon! It was a cold morning for the run (about 23 degrees at race start), but the run along the beach watching the sunrise was worth it! All in all, a great time and a very well organized event.
We got home to find that even out in the country we have some folks who believe they have a right to take things that do not belong to them. Our neighbors had some things stolen from their back porch, so we spent last week increasing some the security around the house.

Apparently, he's letting The Witch and Obama tear each other to shreds, then he comes riding in on the white horse to save the RATS, because you know Breck Girl won't...

Great minds think alike...we swapped out all of our exterior flood lights that were controlled by switches in the house to ones that are motion sensor types. They seem to be working really well and since they have a daylight sensor, they shut off during the day, so we don't have to worry about remembering to turn them on or off!
While putting up posts for a new gate on the outside of the shed, I did manage to break the water line to the house from the pump...never expected it to be right where it was! So we spent the afternoon fixing that with new PVC and a few couplers. More fun than we should have been having on a Sunday afternoon!
Oh well, live and learn!
We went to church yesterday morning with a dusting of "Global Warming" on the lawn and driveway. When we got home, I had to use the "Global Warming" thrower to remove about 5" of "Global Warming" from the driveway.
I mentioned on yesterday's thread that Da Kid accompanied the Church Praise Band on his trumpet. In the middle of a hymn, we lost all power, but after briefly faltering, he led the congregation in the two remaining verses! Proud Papas are such a pain, eh? :-)
With his Mom on travel, Da Kid and I are livin' large. It is such an enjoyment to be able to use the kitchen and cook for him again. I made braised short ribs, mashed potatoes and gravy and steamed broccoli on Saturday and a roast on Sunday.
Friday evening, I had the second Woodwork Merit Badge meeting at the shop at Woodcraft. I taught the Scouts how to turn on the midi lathe and they each made a pen. Da Kid, who is an accomplished pen-turner, served as my assistant instructor and did a fine job. All of the Scouts finished requirement 5b.
It was a very, very good weekend!
Mozie... Couple of things.
I said that Frederick Moyer was here for a concert... that's my general term for a performance. Technically I suppose he did a recital. He played on our new $125,000 Steinway concert grand piano (we have 2 of them at the Village Church) and since he was the only instrument playing I guess that's a recital.
Since the retired music professor lives just a few doors from me I'll find out the title of the Schubert piece. Moyer had CDs, tapes, etc., for sale. When I asked him if he had one of the Schubert piece he indicated it had not yet been recorded but he put me on his mailing list. I intend to purchase that one when it is published.

one of the great theater organists (theater organist of the year 2001). He played both piano and organ during his recital but we had the pleasure of listening to the PREMIER performance of a couple of Leroy Anderson's (the man who wrote "China Doll" etc.) musical pieces.
Eddington visited Anderson's widow and she later sent him some original manuscripts, most of which had never been seen by anyone nor played in public. He played 2 of them and announced that our group was the first to ever hear them outside of his studio. Fascinating!

I don't believe I have ever heard a brass ensemble play so well. The blending of the various brass voices was tremendously well done. The gal who accompanies them is terrific... plays piano, keyboard and organ.

Mr. Peach and I went to our doctor this morning for a checkup and we're both in good health. Physical health, anyway :-)

I just called our utility company....we have a huge long-needled pine next to our driveway that is literally breaking into pieces under the weight of the snow...........and several of the higher branches are now hanging on top of wires. If the top branches go, so will the wires.
We may lose the tree entirely from the looks of it..............between all the branches which have already broken off and the ones they're going to have to remove.:(

For the second time in the past couple of weeks a hawk has come and sit on our patio wall. The one today was not only on the wall but walked around quite a bit on the patio, perched on some patio chairs and I think was looking at itself in the reflection of a window although I couldn't see around the corner far enough to really tell that for sure.
I observed this one for several minutes. Was able to compare my two bird books and I'm confident that it is a Broad Winged Hawk, labeled and illustrated as such in my Readers Digest Field Guide.
Buteo platypterus to be precise, they are listed to be from 13 and a half to 19 inches. I'd say this one was all of 15 or 16. I have no idea if male or female.
Beautiful! Absolutely majestic! I love to watch hawks and eagles. They soar and glide effortlessly (to my eyes) and when perched are truly awesome (in the full meaning of the word) in their regalness. Look at the eye of the bird in your picture on the right. He looks like a stern king.
Oh how wonderful! I would have enjoyed both concerts. That Steinway must have resonated in rich, full chords. It is amazing the tones which can emanate from a good, well-tuned piano.
I played in a recital a couple of weeks ago...........an alumnae event at my alma mater...............anyhoo, the piano was a Mason & Hamlin & I did not care for it. Too bright in the upper range, too "harsh" sounding overall. But I did get to use a Steinway for a duo piano thing I did with one of the teachers at the school, so I was a happy camper.
I'm always intrigued by stories of forgotten manuscripts and newly-discovered music.
Sounds like you've had several opportunities to hear some realy good music recently.......wonderful!!
