I have to purchase a truck based suv. I am looking for one that will lase at least ten years and give me good road handling and rugged to boot. I need a truck base because I have a rugged road to climb to get to my house.

I have beeen loooking at these two vehicles and would really like some input. If you have any others to recommend please chime in.

I am looking in the 30k or less range...and less is better.

"I sell used cars and my father sells Toyotas at the largest volume Toyota dealer on the East coast."

The dealership he works at is one of the largest in the country because of its consistently low, no-haggle prices. He occasionally takes customer phone calls and e-mails from people out of state who arrange to fly in, buy a car, and drive it home. I'm not suggesting you go this far, but if you end up buying an FJ Cruiser or an Xterra, use this as a negotiating reference. If you get a comparable price, it's probably a good deal. Because the prices are non-negotiable, they are already as low or lower than the price you have to haggle and negotiate to get at a "traditional" dealer.

The same company runs another store that sells new Nissans. It operates the same way.

Thanks. On the Nissans, does the price include the manufacturer's rebate?

"Doesnt that thing need an alignment???"

Nah, four-wheel independent steering, two V-8s (one for front axle, one for rear) That thing will sit in one spot and do a tasmanian devil spin. Pretty cool. But I think you'd have to have an engineering degree to figure out how to drive it. It's a concept vehicle, not slated for production..... yet.

if you look at jeeps, get one of the slightly older jeeps with the 4.0L I-6 engine, and a stick. the auto trans in many of the jeeps were junk, and the I-6 is an eternal engine. I've run two of them well past 200k miles, and have seen plenty past 300k.

I would highly recommend the FJ Cruiser. I have had mine for 3 1/2 years and I still love it. I never have trouble in the snow, and off road, it can go where most other vehicles can’t. My boyfriend’s daughter calls it a giant quad. It also looks nice on the road too. The only drawback is that it’s extremely difficult to back-up. The rear is so high that you will not see something like a motorcycle or bicycle that is right behind you, even using your mirrors, so keep that in mind. Other than that, all I can say is that I’m keeping mine until it dies :)
