(Hershey, Pa. 02/16/07)Recently elected Democrat US Sen. Bob Casey Jr. has already caused the loss of 1500 quality high-paying jobs at chocolate giant Hershey Co., analysts confirmed today. Hershey made the announcement along with a statement saying they would instead launch plans to build a new factory in Mexico. (per AP writer Peter Jackson)

Three days of closed interstates in not normal. Penndot should have notified the state police days ago that they were not going to get the interstates plowed. This would have given the State Police the authority to close and not let the trucks on the highway. Penndot dropped the ball. 80 and 81 are still closed. That is a disaster. We are in a Industrial Park in Hazleton and there are 100's of tractor trailers all stuck here.

Can't wait for Rush for some sanity!

You'll have to wait until at least next Tuesday. Walter Williams is sub'ing for Rush today and Monday is President's Day. Rush apparently is still trying to beat his cold ... which he caught playing in inclement weather at the Pro-Am in California. Rush is fast becoming the Johnny Carson of talk radio ...

Sugar imports coming from low cost production countries can impact prices from U.S. sources to some extent, but not significantly. They would drop by at least 50%. I call that significant.

Well, even if that percentage is correct it isn't the price of sugar alone that's pushing Hershey to pull up stakes in PA and head for Mexico. Labor costs are at the crux of the problem ... pure and simple.

From the Christian Science Monitor

For example, Kraft, based in nearby Northfield, Ill., pays half as much for Canadian sugar as for American. So when the company was looking to close its underutilized LifeSavers plant in Holland, Mich., it set its sights across the border. This January, Kraft announced it would move its traditional LifeSavers line to its Mount Royal plant near Quebec City.

Labor costs are a problem, but Kraft sure didn't move to Canada for cheep labor. With taxes, labor cost is likely the same or even higher in Canada. It's sugar costs that forced them out. They can buy sugar there at half the cost as in the US and the only ones who benifit from that artifically high sugar cost are a handful of millionare sugar farmers and FL & LA, and the Congress critters they bribe to keep the corrupt quotas in place.

Once again it isn't the cost of sugar it's labor and all the costs associated with it, i.e., health insurance, pensions; liability insurance cost (tort reform needed), infrastructure cost involved with old plant sites. As far as Kraft is concerned I'm sure they got a sweetheart deal from the Province of Ontario.

Don't know if they did or not... they already had a plant there and simply relocated the "Life Saver" product line . Do you have some source that says they got some incentive, or are you just guessing?

And why do you think that saving 50% or sugar cost on a product made of 90% sugar was not the reason? Do you think there would be any auto manufacturing left in the US if steel here cost twice as much as anywhere else in the world? Why should candy be any different?

I don't understand what they did this time around, they let it pile up and stack up ice on top of the snow. Is that a better way of handling it other then plowing and then dealing with the ice?

Read this in the WSJ this AM ... no mention of job loss attributed to Se. Bob Casey.

Didn't you notice the cynical tone to this 'self written' lead sentence.

I was simply pointing out the hypocracy of the media and the Democrats (same thing really) who during the '06 campaign blamed Sen. Santorum for every job loss in Pennsylvania the past 12 years..... when in fact Santorum had nothing whatsoever do to with such events.

Further, my statements made no mention whatsoever of the rightness or wrongness of the NA free trade agreement, only the rank hypocracy from news reporters everywhere.

But the mess on I-80 is an every winter event.

I think what's happening here is that normally sensible people have been brainwashed by the type of media madness which blamed GWB and the federal government for the devastation following Hurricane Katrina.

In fact, I am still SEETHING MAD over the media coverage which blamed FEMA and GWB for "failing" to deliver every single creature comfort known to man to millions of people around New Orleans within 24 hours of the last Hurricane Katrina raindrop.

THE ROADS WERE FREAKIN' impassable due to downed trees, 30-foot sinkholes, washouts, debris fields, etc. --- and you cannot supply an entire region with supplies with helicopters only.

Yet normally sensible Americans (including many Republicans) ended up joining the chorus of Bush-haters who blamed the Prez.

I hate to say it, but maybe it's time to fight fire with fire, and use the same bogus hype AGAINST the Democraps as they (with the media) use against Republicans.
