I used to think Free Republic was a site with mostly rational people. I can't understand why so many of you waste your time with Duncan Hunter fantasies. Really folks hallucinogenic drugs are illegal and bad for you too. Stop taking them !!! No one outside of the Hunter family and this website thinks he has the remotest chance of being elected President. The Ronald Reagan comparisons are idiotic. Reagan had been a two term Governor of the largest state in the nation. He had been a national household name for over 40 years when he ran in 1980. God only made one Ronald Reagan. Duncan Hunter, although he is a solid Congressman, is no Ronald Reagan. I'm a conservative and I would love to have a viable conservative to work for this election cycle. But we don't have one. McCain is a no go for me. I loathe the treacherous man and believe he is non-compos mentis (loony). That leaves Mitt and Rudy. Newt's entry would hopefully pull the other two to the right (which would be great), and he might even win the nomination (which would probably be bad as I don't think he would win the general election).
That would leave us with Hildebeast or even worse B. Hussein Obama. Therefore, although I'm pro-life, pro-gun, and anti the mainstreaming of homosexuality, I am trying to decide between Rudy and Mitt.
For me the war on islamo nazi psychos is the top issue and Rudy gets my vote on that one.
Issue two is finding a candidate who won't give in to global warming hysteria because that is the lefties preferred path currently to world government and destruction of our economic system. I have to look into Mitt's position on this because Rudy made some rather discouraging comments on this recently (although they were not as bad as originally reported here.)
Next is immigration. We need someone to enforce our laws and get control of the borders. Mitt seems to the right of Rudy on this but both have a way to go. Maybe Tancredo in the race can generate some movement.
Taxes - we need to keep the Bush tax cuts at the very minimum and hopefully get a bolder overhaul of the system.
Judges - we want young Scalias.
Spending restraint - I'm hoping that both, as successful businessmen, will hold the line on spending better than GWB who was a total disappointment in this area.
Let's try to move the viable candidates closer to us on the issues rather than engage in self defeating fantasies of "ideal" candidates who no one has ever heard of and who have never run any larger organization than a Congressman's staff.

"Responses"? I read those, didn't figure there was anything to say, and left it at that. I don't post for the sheer pleasure of reading my own words. :-)
I asked if they'd support Rudy in the general. I got an answer. I don't have a problem with them with-holding their vote if they feel they should. If McCain got the nod, I'd almost certainly vote 3rd party.
Altho, the 'bullying' tone of posting over and over and over again, "If Rudy gets the nod, I'm outta here!" is another story. That tone is working against ya'lls cause, big time. If you feel strongly that way, more power to ya. But the 'end of the world' rhetoric -- much like the Ds hate speach against GW -- actually makes people like me sympathize with Rudy.
I'm mainly a curious bystander in all this. I have nothing to do with who gets nominated, of course, so I'm interested to see who's drawing a line in the sand. And I'll be watching to see what comes of it all, if/when Rudy gets the nomination.
This is going to be one of the more interesting elections I've seen, unless I miss my guess.

Politically, I'm radically conservative.
Yet many here like yourself seem to be of the opinion that I don't belong here if I want personal freedom on issues like abortion, and gays. I want a 'conservative' use of federal power. I believe that Roe v. Wade should be overturned, and the issue sent back to the states. Personally, I don't have a problem with folks choosing to terminate their babies in the womb. Altho I respect your feelings to the contrary.
I'm a "Contract with America" conservative. Y'know, one of the folks that helpt to give the Rs the majority in the first place? :-)
Mo1 hasn't trashed anyone. In fact, I've seen Mo1 say to the effect that it's childish, off-putting, and counterproductive.
To me, it's like being a roomful of little spoiled children.

With regard to the nasty tone that some of these threads take-- please keep in mind that this thread was begun with a vanity referring to Hunter supporters as "idiotic" and warning them to stop taking hallucinogenic drugs. Might not be the best team building approach.
I noted a few people making the argument that Hunter doesn't have enough experience, that being a Representative isn't sufficient. Giuliani, on the other hand, was a mayor-- though of probably the major city in the US. Do you think it is the executive vs. the legislative role that makes the difference? Is it the size of Hunter's district vs. the massive size of NYC? One of my more mundane concerns about Giuliani is his experience, but I don't see many other posters sharing that concern. Anyway, I hope that other posters, including Giuliani supporters, can understand that some conservatives have real moral issues with Giuliani. I don't like to see those concerns dismissed with a "so you want Hillary to win, do you troll" response. I still think it is too early to declare anyone the victor.

I think there needs to be a thread on FR to define the word "conservative" because what's passing for conservative these days makes me think that I'm definitely something else.

A President Giuliani would mean victory for liberalism, and a defeat to its opposition.
So, again I ask: "Duncan Hunter, will you support Giuliani if he is the nominee?"
Put another way, "Do you value your principles above party?"
OK, that sounds like a reasonable question to ask Duncan Hunter.

Yes, my opinion is that you dont belong here. But, its not my site nor my decision whether you stay or go. That said, Ive read thru some of your posts and find that you show respect, which is more than some of the "true" conservatives here on FR have done. I'll engage you in a debate, anytime. :o)
