Got a gift subscription on Netflix. Not having not gone to a movie for some time, I'm lost. I need suggestions for my wife and me. thanks,
"Apocalypto" is a must own movie for me. I mostly buy HD-DVDs these days and I'm just dying that this will be on Blu-ray. Oh well I can hope the digital photography means a great DVD transfer and it upconverts really well.
If you check it out let me know. I haven't seen it for quite a few years myself. It came to mind because Lifeboat is one of those character development films as people are isolated (in that case a lifeboat), and in Flight of the Phoenix in the desert as part of a plane crash...and Old Man and the Sea as a lone fisherman. I don't know if you've seen A Room with a View, but I'd recommend it. It's much more light hearted than some of these more serious and intense films, but it's an entertaining story of the progression of the female protagonist's lie as it rolls along much like a snowball that keeps getting bigger. But pretty light stuff...and has some excellent scenery as much of it takes place in Italy.
Falling Down
Sky Captain And The World Of Tommorrow
I love TCM and the Robert Osbourne shows. He does wonderful interviews.
Speaking of TCM, there are the Forbidden Hollywood movies (early "30's). I just saw Red Headed Woman. That was a strange flick. I can certainly understand why some communities banned these movies (not just for the morals but maybe also the bad acting).
Uncle Buck! Oh yeah! Great movie. Can't resist it whenever it's on. Altho this person has indicated he's seen everything twice. I have to 'ASSUME' "Uncle Buck" is in that list.
Most John Candy films are great. Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, The Great Outdoors, what else?? Have i forgotten something. There were a couple that weren't so hot. That one with Maureen O'Hara/O'Sullivan and Canadian Bacon. IMO of course.
Other than Candy films, how bout Chevy Chase. "Fletch Lives" is one of my faves.
But then again consider the source. I love "Baseketball" and "Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls" too. Oh and "Office Space". These movies are so well known that this person must've already seen them. I got nothin'.
Earth Girls are Easy? Funny film. You probably like it because of Gina Davis' long legs.
Another strange, funny film: Grosse Pointe Blank with John Cusack. After seeing that film you can never go to a high school reunion without cracking up. Might be the funniest film I've ever seen.
If you're more of a Quentin Tarantino fan, I'm not a big fan of excessive violence, but I do think that True Romance is a great movie that kind of goes under the radar (he wrote, directed by Tony Scott). Some of the cast include Christian Slater (normally not a big fan, but great in this one), Patricia Arquette, Val Kilmer (as Elvis!) Dennis Hooper, Gary Oldman, Brad Pitt (as a stoner), Chistopher Walken, James Gandolfini, and more that you'll recognize.
I don't think it's been announced yet. Probably will be at the end of it's theatrical run which should be any day now.
Phantom of the Opera (latest version)
Pride and Prejudice (i prefer the 1995 version much more)
Dear Frankie
Must Love Dogs
The Lake House
Moonlighting (the movie)
Timeline
The Office (British version) 1 & 2
We love old movies, just get in there and browse. Have fun!
Never seen True Romance. Will look for it in the video store tonite. Love that cast. Especially Christopher Walken.
I am half Italian as a matter of fact. But not easily offended. If it is offensive to me, i'll let you know!
I've only seen portions of Tremors and American Werewolf in London and they seemed ok but weren't compelling to me, haven't seen Army of Darkness. When I want to go for guilty pleasures I'd go for something like Galaxy Quest, Bladerunner or Big Trouble in Little China.
The Guardian
One night with the King
A Letter for Joey(I think that's the title)
Try pluggedinonline.com for suggestions
1) When Clarence (Christian Slater)goes to settle things with Alabama's pimp (Gary Oldman).
2) The scene you mentioned when Christopher Walken deals with Dennis Hopper..."Sicilians carry the n*gg*r gene..."
3) The scene where Alabama meets James Gandolfino "Tony Soprano" in the hotel room.
Remember, this was a movie that Bob Dole cited in his call to have Hollywood clean up it's act.
I loved Crash and Magnolia for plot twists.
Bourne Identity & Bourne Supremacy were also good,
as was the Manchurian Candidate.
Enemy Mine w/Lou Gossett
