Although it's *far* from recent,I just discovered "The Apartment" a few weeks ago and it's now my favorite film of all time. Also,if you haven't seen Schindler's List,I'd encourage you to do so.Speilberg's politics stink (IMO) but he sure knows how to make a film.

Also,snook...I checked out your profile page and saw mention of your having served in WWII.Would you care to share with us some of your experiences? It's certainly understandable why you might not want to but I just had to ask.

(My Dad was an "essential civilian employee" who designed missiles for the Navy during the war so I never got to hear any "war stories")

I agree completely and my husband really enjoys these films (he liked Pride and Prejudice too although it's not quit up to the standard set by S & S).

My son however ... told his H.S. buddies they would regret it when they chose to watch
S & S during Liturature. Every guy came to him after class with "you were right man". Sigh...

Rear Window is IMO one of the greatest and most original movies of all times. Hitchcock was really firing on all cylinders there. The DVD I have is poor quality though so I hesitate to recommend it. (Another movie burdened with a poor DVD transfer is "The Black Stallion" with its fabulous cinematography)
Another Hitchcock that I really enjoy is Lifeboat. What topnotch performances in that.

Oh man, you'll love Netflix. Every movie on there has user reviews and is grouped by categories. You can add a bunch of movies in your queue and rearrange them and watch them at will. It takes a bit to get used to, but it rocks.

Dodgeball. Coarse, but hilarious.
My Cousin Vinny
We Are Marshall (may be too new to be out)
Second Hand Lions
Independence Day
Men in Black (I and II)
Sabrina
An Affair to Remember

That's a mixed bag.

The movies I would suggest are probably not offered through NetFlix.

Lifeboat is an excellent movie, which brings to mind two additional films in Flight of the Phoenix (original, not the lame remake) and The Old Man and the Sea.

The best thing we've seen lately from Netflix is "Junebug", an independent film that did not get the attention it should have:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Junebug_(film)

Netflix has virtually everything that's ever been on DVD. We have also been watching early Edison films (1880-1907), watching the very beginning of film history.

You can also get whole series of TV shows (and the Bob Newhart show from the '70s holds up!), specials, and miniseries.

- The Charles Dickens Collection (Oliver Twist / Martin Chuzzlewit / Bleak House / Hard Times / Great Expectations / Our Mutual Friend) - BBC - Great presentations!

- Henry Fielding's Tom Jones - BBC - Conflict of Virtue and Vice, Tragic, Hilarious and well done!

I checked with Netflix.com and they do have some of them.

"Miracle" (2004) with Kurt Russell is great - our whole family enjoyed it.

"Apocalypto" had me on the edge of the seat all the time although it probably won't be out in DVD for a while.

If you are looking for something really off-beat, there is the oldie "Freaks" which has been or is about to be released for in DVD.

Rear Window is IMO one of the greatest and most original movies of all times. Hitchcock was really firing on all cylinders there.

Grace Kelly, Jimmy Stewart, and Hitchcock all at their very best. Even the supporting players Raymond Burr, Martha Hyer, and Wendell Corey were great.

P.S. Grace Kelly was one of the all-time beauties! The best thing to come out of Philadelphia since cheesesteaks!

P.P.S. The Third Man is also an all-time classic, and the setting in post-war Vienna unique.

Yes I pretty much watch TCM only these days.....

I haven't seen The Old Man and the Sea for years but I remember really liking it. I wonder how it will hold up for me. I hope like Lifeboat which I was glad to find is just as good to me now as when I was a kid.
