Hello my fellow freepers, I'm thinking of migrating from Windows XP (don't like the new Windows Vista), to a Linux OS, however, before that I make that move, I would like to know what is the best Linux that I can run on a CD.. Thanks!
Ok... I thank you and I thank everybody else for the suggestions..
Due to numerous issues brought to light by our first test release we will not be releasing PCLinuxOS 2007 final at the end of the month. There is simply too much work and not enough time to get a final release out by January 31th. We do plan to on issuing another test release soon. Final will be ready when it is ready.
The only reason why that I'm leaning towards Linux is that it can support Java (I'm a Java Developer) and I heard that Windows Vista can't support Java...
Java comes from Sun, use Solaris not Linux.

Typical FUD, use Windows or Solaris, .NET and JAVA are the way to go if not both. Forget clones like JBOSS and MONO.
Ok, thanks!!!!
BTW, I've been playing with Linux distros since 1998, and Kubuntu 6.10 is the first that just installed and ran. Even SuSe 10.0 did weird things with the display during installation (which made it difficult to answer the questions), though it seemed fine once installed.
I used to keep a Windows machine in the office (Win98) but no more.
I'd have to say Ubuntu. You can run it as a live CD and then once you are running it as a live CD you can choose to install it to the hard drive. If your hardware isn't quite good enough to run Ubuntu at a great speed, then you may want to try Xubuntu, which uses XFCE instead of GNOME (XFCE is less memory-using than GNOME or KDE).
Java comes from Sun, but runs on just about any OS including Linux and Windows.
Both Java and .NET will run on Windows, Linux, and Solaris. I favor .NET, myself; I feel that C# has more flexibility than Java and am particularly awaiting the functional features that are due in C# 3.0 like anonymous lambda functions (yes, I know that anonymouse delegates in C# 2.0).
Yes, I prefer products originating from the United States. The fact that "Senor Zorro" would disagree is hardly a surprise.
*Sigh*. Same old, same old. In a free market, the best product wins. Besides, American companies sell and work on Linux (by paying developers to work on it). If you're so hung up on origins, Torvalds is from Finland originally (though he works and lives in the US now). Last I heard, we aren't being threatened by Finland. Ultimately, Linux isn't from anywhere in particular since you have people working on it all over the world.

I've answered you on this subject before. Besides, what the heck does my screen name have to do with what I said? It doesn't prove anything, but 95% or so of what you say is ad hominem anyway, so it isn't really surprising.
KevinDavis: Note how he couldn't argue when I said he had a vendetta and how his "comeback" had no technical content whatsoever.
Well nothing dominates its market any more than Windows, an American product you obviously hate. Guess you'll have to come up with some other reason we should trash it and use your foreign clone of Unix instead.

It's better. Use the best tool for the job. Which part of that don't you understand? Moreover, I never said that there is no valid reason to use Windows. A few posts ago, I said to "use what you like" and "there are valid reasons to use and not to use Linux". That hardly sounds like the bile you're making it sound like.
