Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro was euthanized Monday morning after complications from his breakdown at the Preakness last May.
"We just reached a point where it was going to be difficult for him to go on without pain," co-owner Roy Jackson said. "It was the right decision, it was the right thing to do. We said all along if there was a situation where it would become more difficult for him then it would be time."
A big heart for sure.

Prayers and love for all innocent animals from here ................ always and always.
I mean this sincerely: Concentrate on helping humans. Humans are more valuable in God's sight than animals. It's easier to help animals but it's the humans that have infinite worth in God's perspective.
I've started a new life for myself, within the last 4 years .. top to bottom and each way in between ... bringing my faith with me, always ... I've a new friend, I met her at church ... she's in 8th grade and has MS ... I taped pictures of my dog, a Saint Bernard, on her bedroom wall ... the first shows him scared as the dickens of a thunder storm about to come .... and another, with his tail up, nose too .... sniffing the air and waiting for the challenge of a storm brewing ... haunches set and ready for the ride ...
Beth says, each day she looks at those pictures and decides she wants her nose up ....
I've another friend, met at my new church ... who had a stroke ... and he comes to walk my Old Soul maybe once a week ... Old Soul naturally slows down for him ... even stopping to turn and look up as if to say, "You Okay?! I can wait, if you need me to."
Well ... I sound silly, I suppose. I was happy you replied .... I always put people first ... but mindful He gave us so many tools ....
Pro-life ping.
Scientists have learned for decades through their work on animals.
God bless Barbaro for his contribution to the good of all humans and animals!!
Lovely article. Thanks, HOTD!
"Where in the world can man find nobility without pride,
friendship without envy,
or beauty without vanity?
Here, where grace is laced with muscle,
and strength by gentleness confined.
He serves without servility,
has fought without enmity,
There is nothing so powerful,
nothing less violent,
nothing as quick,
nothing more patient.
The world's past has been borne on his back.
We are his heirs;
he is our inheritance.
The horse."
-- Ronald Duncan in Ode to the Horse
Thank you for the Ode to the Horse. Perfect!
It's too bad some human beings in third-world countries don't get 1/100 the attention barbaro got. He was, in the end, just a horse people. There are kids dying of AIDS and malaria every day that no one gives a darn about, but a racehorse is sent flowers and posters and people spend millions trying to cure him...strange world
Love and prayers from here ..........
That Haskin article is lovely, Hair. I cried this morning at work when I got the news over my cell phone. But the need to focus on work forced me to choke back my feelings. Now that I'm home the tears are pouring.
You dare to suggest how other people should spend their money?
May I remind you that this is America. We can and do more for those unfortunate people around the world than any other country on earth. And let me remind you, that it's the American people who make sure there is money for the least of us in this world.
ah. formatting didn't come out
STFU!!! You sanctimonious twits who yammer on about God -- as though you just had lunch with Him -- make me sick. To put this in terms even someone like you might grasp, the same God you presume to speak for made human beings with the capacity to feel compassion and love, not just for our own kind, but for the other creatures He made to share this planet with us.
Matthew 6:1 -- Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven."
"Thanks so much for all of your updates since the time of Barbaro's accident."
You are most welcome.
I appreciate the love and caring shown by FreeRepublic.
I'm taking this a bit harder than I thought I would.
Oh well. Life goes on.
You're an ass.
"It's too bad some human beings in third-world countries don't get 1/100 the attention barbaro got. He was, in the end, just a horse people."
Spare me you jerk. Why can't assh*les like you let us grieve without bringing "third-world countries" into it?
Go to another thread.
The personal attack stings deeper than you might ever know. I'll go in a corner and lick my wounds now. I appreciate the personal attack, and also how you completely and totally ignored my post and replied for the sole purpose of flaming me.
I see that you are not only eloquent and well-spoken, you are a skilled debater as well. Good day, and if mourning for a dead racehorse is what makes you happy, more power to you.
