Barbaro is euthanized

Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro was euthanized Monday morning after complications from his breakdown at the Preakness last May.

"We just reached a point where it was going to be difficult for him to go on without pain," co-owner Roy Jackson said. "It was the right decision, it was the right thing to do. We said all along if there was a situation where it would become more difficult for him then it would be time."

This is really sad news today. The three of us had some very good discussions on threads in the past about Barbaro. (They really did try. ...That all horses injured in our service had the care and love that he did.) I had trust in Dr. Richardson and Barbaro's owners to do the right thing and not let this magnificent animal suffer. I do believe they did manage this. My hope is much was learned in treating Barbaro which will stand to benefit all our beloved pets. Barbaro had such great heart.

A big heart for sure.

I've started a new life for myself, within the last 4 years .. top to bottom and each way in between ... bringing my faith with me, always ... I've a new friend, I met her at church ... she's in 8th grade and has MS ... I taped pictures of my dog, a Saint Bernard, on her bedroom wall ... the first shows him scared as the dickens of a thunder storm about to come .... and another, with his tail up, nose too .... sniffing the air and waiting for the challenge of a storm brewing ... haunches set and ready for the ride ...

Beth says, each day she looks at those pictures and decides she wants her nose up ....

I've another friend, met at my new church ... who had a stroke ... and he comes to walk my Old Soul maybe once a week ... Old Soul naturally slows down for him ... even stopping to turn and look up as if to say, "You Okay?! I can wait, if you need me to."

Well ... I sound silly, I suppose. I was happy you replied .... I always put people first ... but mindful He gave us so many tools ....

It's too bad some human beings in third-world countries don't get 1/100 the attention barbaro got. He was, in the end, just a horse people. There are kids dying of AIDS and malaria every day that no one gives a darn about, but a racehorse is sent flowers and posters and people spend millions trying to cure him...strange world

I would venture to guess there are people who spent an hour buying a poster and decorating it and going to the post office to mail it who don't give a second thought to the rest of the world other than to listen to the occasional NPR news report on Iraq. You dare to suggest how other people should spend their money? Yes I do. Call me insensitive, but I think the world would be a better place if millions spent on a racehorse doomed to die were instead spent on, oh, maybe human beings. Call me a sicko, but I have this ridiculous idea that human lives are more valuable than horses' lives. Then again, seeing how Terry Schiavo was mindlessly slaughtered with the blessing of many on this site, I'm probably in the minority here. May I remind you that this is America.
