Oh I've heard of Olaf Stapledon. If you ever get the idea that you're somebody special, his "Last and First Men" will cure you of that. And if that novel doesn't do it, his history of the entire universe, "Star Maker," will.

The problem with Stapledon is that you have to be bright to fully appreciate him. Unfortunately, I'm not there. :)
