I read you shouldn't take the biggest or smallest of the litter, but I also read how to "test" a puppy. Even though he's the smallest puppy he was relaxed when I held him, relaxed when I put him in the cruk of my arm and looked me in the eyes for a long time. He was alert and looked when I clapped and he was the only one who cocked his head to say "what" when I talked to him. He held his own with the other puppies without being too rambunctous. He allowed me to hold him out with no other support and didn't squirm and looked me in the eyes, he allowed me to put him on his back and played and swatted at my fingers. He did all the right things you want from a puppy except he was the "runt" of the litter. I was assured that there should only be a difference in height of all the puppies of about 2 inches anyway. I'll post more pictures when I get him in 3 weeks, in the interm I will visit and handle him as much as possible so that the move is less stressful for him. On to the pictures!
Adorable! You will get 15 - 18 years out of him, if everything goes well. I never cared for poodles, particularly, until my daughter "rescued" one. He was aged 8 when she got him and had been abused and deprived. I told her that it was a bad idea to adopthim because he would surely die just when the kids got to really love him.
He is a magnificent dog and has been a delight to the family. I take back everything I ever said about poodles. I'm quite sure that they are the smartest breed out there, after training with a couple of poodles atwatching my daughter's dog. They put my Golden to shame with their intelligence and trainability.
Sounds like a great name for a standard poodle, especially if the owner plans to hunt him. The dog needs a good one syllable name, and Jake fits just fine. You don't want to put a frou, frou sissy name on a male standard. Destroys his dignity! :)
Duck? I notice they are including duck in many of the high end kibbles they sell around here these days.
They're both beautiful dogs and the look in their eyes says it all, they know what's going on.
I was the same with poodles until I got my first one, I don't mean to denigrate any other breeds when I talk about their intelligence which you've been exposed to. I would love a dumb, happy, mutt just as much.
Even though her poodle was 8 and abused it came to life with good human contact, that's a great story.
If you ever told me I would be a poodle enthusiast I would probably have said there's about as much chance as that as me wearing a Tutu and becoming a ballerina.
Having a Golden is like having a wonderful two year old, for always. See,I told you poodles are smarter!
My late Golden died at 15 1/2. She was nearly deaf, had cataracts, and so stiff she could no longer go up and downstairs and could bearly get up in the morning. But, once you got her up, you could say "puppy, puppy, puppy" in a certain tone and she could still stir up enough excitement to respond to a treat. I still miss her, although I am thoroughly enjoying my "new" Golden who is about 6.
The abuse I mentioned was mostly neglect. My daughter adopted this poodle from the humane society after its original owners had lost their house and could no longer care for him. He hadn't been groomed for months and had seriously infected ears. Then the Humane Society vet neutered him without bathing him first and he got another infection. I think she spent nearly $1000 curing him of all the ingrown hairs and infections. He is a beautiful dog and very tolerant of her 3 boys -- one of them autistic.
His only "quirk" is that he HATES flash cameras and has been known to slip out of the house and run away when people are taking pictures. He's done that twice in five years and she has been fortunate to find him and bring him home safely both times. I just bought him a flashing collar (which he can't see) because he is black and invisible at night. He doesn't notice the flashing onthe collar because it's on the back of his neck, so he tolerates it fine.
He loves to swim and he loves to play in the sprinkler. She has to watch him closeley so that he doesn't consume too much water, however, because he can make himself sick. he gets along finewithall the children and all the neighbors, too.
It's too bad they can't remain physically two or five years old. They get old but they still have that puppy spirit.
I have loved and enjoyed all of my dogs. They have all been smart, but their personality has always been a wonderful grab bag!

Me too, that one's been growing on me quite a bit, perfect posture, tail up, the look of wonderment of everything new and exciting, with no idea of the joy coming to him in his future with me. Pure innocence.
I don't know how easy it is to find duck at the meat market.
Here's a little anectdote for you, the chew toys these puppies are using are called "Macho Sticks", they are dried bull penises.

I named him "Zhock" (Americanized version of "Jacques") and never regretted the choice of dog or name!

He's really concentrating on his next "mission", he was such a good boy with me, I miss him so much, I want to see if the breeder has time for me to play with him tomorrow. If I get to see him I'll post some pictures of me and him playing.

Sadly, Zhock passed away at 9 years old.
We were so closely bonded that I haven't had the desire to get another dog because I'd always be making comparisons.
I'll dig around and post an appropriate snapshot.
