I am so stoked to see this movie -- it is killing me that I may have to wait until Talledega week for it to come to Alabama.

Dale wanted to have that penny for the rest of the race season but rules said he couldnt.

"If you're a badass and you can back it up, it will intimidate people. Dale could look at people, and just by looking at them, Dale could make them doubt themselves."

Yeah, that pretty much sums up Earnhardt. He was a one-of-a-kind combination of raw God-given talent, smarts (as opposed to "book larnin'"), and sheer determination.

I always did wonder about his crash...it really did look like he was blocking back there trying to keep Michael Waltrip in the lead so he could win the Daytona 500. #3 was such a competitor, though, I'm not sure I could see him doing that, y'know? I always figured he'd drive over his own team's car with his grandmother in it if it was between him and a checkered flag. :)

I think I like Dale's NASCAR better than the modern version. The drivers (with a few exceptions) all seem to be turning into polished, blow-dried pretty-boy clones of each other. We need more DWs and Earnhardts and that type, real characters with flaws in addition to their strengths.

"Dale Earnhardt is one of the most intriguing personalities in American history"

Oh, puleeeze. With all due respect, isn't that a bit much? Until he died, I had never even heard of him.

Sharyn McCrumb's novel Saint Dale recycles Chaucer's Canterbury Tales as a bus tour of Earnhardt fans to the sacred sites where he raced.

Earnhart was a stock car driver who did everything he could to win, even driving dirty. I sure don't see him as anything special. He lost doing what he loved to do, he was a lucky man.

"...He lost doing what he loved to do, he was a lucky man.
..."

Just like a pilot that dies in a horrendous crash. I've heard and read that any pilot worth his salt would rather go out that way than something stupid as a slip in the bath tub.
Since this is a NASCAR/CMT thread, I included those pix because of the similarity of Dale and Kix. Also, because Dale was in a B&D video.

I wondered about that too but after reading the article, I realized the similarity was that of a nationally known figure bring taken away from us in a sudden accident, right before our eyes. You know, the same sick feeling when the evidence of the rocket plume or the car in the wall with no motion within is right there in front of you and you're thinking "no, it can't be." Then it fits.

"Earnhart was a stock car driver who did everything he could to win, even driving dirty." Exactly right! Also, I do not think he was better than the King Richard Petty. Petty won more.

You are exacly right. Think about this, could Ned, Benny,
Junior, Cale or the like get a ride today?

It seems like the present attitude is, "Yeah, he's a good
driver and all, but we need someone prettier for our TV
commercials."

I think NASCAR died with Dale Earnhradt.

While I agree Petty was just as good if not better than Dale, comparing wins is an Apples and Oranges thing.

When Petty was driving there was no Busch series, many weeks there were races on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Petty had many years where he ran 60+ races, and they all counted toward the win stats.

But when you look at it from a pure Domination stand point, Petty dominated his era just as much or more than E dominated his.
