If you were to live outside of the US, what country would you pick to be an ex-pat in? Why?

Estonia - they're actually taking the late Milton Friedman's ideas to heart there.

No place.

Over all where ever you would decide to go there would be freedoms and rights you would have to give up. And as you would have no right to participate in their political process you would have to smile and take it once you got there.

Are there other places to live? Sure. And I have lived in a lot of them. Some of them are not bad. But there is no place like the USA.

Are you Woody Allen?

Good, we need to keep the republicans around.
I'll be watching less news, that's for sure, if that witch gets into the white house.

For sheer post-card beauty: I'd live homeless on the streets of
Vancouver, B.C.

For a decent amount of freedom/autonomy: Australia, then maybe New Zealand.

My understanding is that in the POW camps the Japanese built in WWII...
it was the troops of Australia and the USA that found common bond.
Maybe that's not a scientific way of looking for an "affinity
group", but with the way Australia has stuck with the USA in The
War on Terror...Australia works for me if I must flee.

Of course I could be biased by my formative years in Oklahoma.
I grew up in a state initially populated by outlaws and rounders...
so Australia sounds OK to me.

Is off-planet a valid choice?

If not, some english-speaking country.

I lived in Finland for two years. Brutal winters, but safe and well-governed. They also are not too receptive to refugees, which are causing major problems in Sweden and Denmark.

The only other European country I will consider is Austria. Friendly people, reasonable cost of living and very pretty.

Austtralia and New Zealand are probably the closest culture match to the US. I know many immigrants both ways, and all of them seem reasonably happy.

I'm surprised no-one has mentioned Singapore. According to the expats whom I know that live there, very good, probably the best in Asia.

If you want to go to Africa, there is only one choice, Namibia. It is a huge country with a relatively small population, a pretty stable government and a great standard of living. Health-care is in general very good, and if you require serious treatment, South Africa is a two-hour plane ride away. The people are very friendly too.

Count me as another vote for Australia. They're taking a strong stand on Muzzie BS and I have many friends there.

Costa Rica does not welcome immigrants, unless you are very very wealthy and invest in the country.
