Perhaps the back light is burnt out?
They are typically florescent bulbs that are well buried behind the screen.
The machine is about the right age for the bulb to go.

Dinsdale, is correct, the backlight has burned out.
That may be one of the cheaper fixes, keep your fingers crossed.
The laptop guy I work with can replace the bulbs in a 1/2 hour.
