BTW: In my part of NJ, I have swerved to avoid deer, opposum, and a wild turkey, but never a coyote (yet).

A few years ago, driving out here to the desert from our (then) home, I nailed one at 75 as it tried to cross Interstate 10 in front of me....it was 10pm, so I had no reaction time - just felt the thumpety thump as it went underneath the car.

I was more than glad it was sprinting at a low angle, because if I'd have caught it at high stride it might have gone thru the windshield.

Big "whew"...

Next morning, come daylight, I checked - no harm, no foul; we'd met smack middle on the bumper - no dents, just a bunch of greyish fur all along the undercarriage of the Camry.

Down in southern NJ they are common. So are foxes. I see the coyotes all the time by where we keep our RV. They usually stay on the other side of the swampy area. So far I have not heard of them coming into the campground. I hope they don't as I don't want my little shih tzu or pek-a-shih to be a snack for any. We have black bears and some nasty looking snakes too.
