My son had been on me for a while to watch this video... I love U2, and loved the song when I first heard it, but I'm not really appreciative of Green Day's message and politics (obviously), so I avoided it for a while.
That said, I was pretty blown away by this video, and can't believe Green Day had anything to do with it, unless I'm just retarded and missing something?
Global warming???
I liked "American Idiot" quite a bit. It was a good pop albumn, and Green Day showed real musical growth as a band.
I don't care about their politics, I think it's cute when people who make music for a living try to share their 'analysis' of things.
Like when my kids explain to me why doing chores is "stupid" and "a waste of time".
The hurricane did not cause the NO devastation. Years of local political corruption- including some good ol' chocolate racism- produced an environment where maintenance on the levies was non existent.
Actually, I think How To Dimantle An Atomic Bomb is an outstanding piece of work, pretty much start to finish.

LOL.
Seems to me the message of the video is that the military should be used for humananitarian efforts as opposed to the mission it exists to perform. Seems on par for these guys. Definitely didn't get a pro military vibe from it.
I know that I am about a month too late for this one....but I thought I would weigh in since I recently downloaded the video from iTunes.
In my humble opinion, you can always tell whether or not a group or a filmmaker is pro-military by whether or not they hire a military advisor for the film. In this case, I can assure you of one of two things: 1) Either the producers of the video did not hire a military advisor or 2) They did hire an advisor and promptly refused to listen to him/her.
Sorry to nitpick, but the AH-64 Apache is an attack helicopter (which is why it is pictured in the video bristling with weapons) and although I am sure that it could be fitted with a winch and rescue retrival equipment, I am quite sure that it would never be used to rescue actual people since there is no where for the rescued personnel to sit, unless the pilot could somehow drag them through the port side window and have them sit on his lap. I could go on and on about the unrealistic depiction of a variety of military equipment used in the video, but I am sure you catch my meaning.
Germane to the topic is, of course, the song itself. Take from it what you will (it is obviously a remake of the original classic sang by The Skids, a scottish punk rock band who first released it in 1978 as a tribute to the death of a british soldier in Northern Ireland), the song was re-released by Green Day and U2 as an obvious attempt to show how simple it should be to recall thousands of troops home from Iraq so that they could go rescue all the poor victims of Hurricane Katrina. Claptrap.

The USS Bataan followed behind katrina into NO. Its an amphib ship which is about the size of an aircraft carrier.
"More will arrive throughout the weekend when the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman and four other Navy ships, including three amphibious assault ships--really mini-aircraft carriers for helicopter use--arrive in the gulf from Norfolk, Va. The USS Comfort, a hospital ship from Baltimore, also is steaming there."
