Word For The Day, Wednesday, January 17, 2007 - consanguineous
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary ^ | January 17, 2007 | The Janitor

Posted on 01/17/2007 7:23:54 AM PST by VRWCmember

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

consanguineous • \kahn-san-GWIN-ee-us\ • adjective

of the same blood or origin; specifically, descended from the same ancestor

Example sentence:

Brent hadn't believed that the man who claimed to be his long-lost cousin was telling the truth, but the documents proved that the two men were consanguineous.

Did you know?
"Consanguineous" is part of a family of "blood" relatives that all descend from the Latin noun "sanguis," meaning "blood." Some of these relatives are found on the literal branch of the family tree, as "exsanguination," a term for the draining or removal of blood. Others are on the figurative side of the family, such as "sanguine," a word that can mean "bloodred" or "ruddy" but that is more often used with the meaning "cheerful" or "optimistic." There is also "sangfroid," a French word (literally meaning "cold blood") that was borrowed into English to refer to self-control under stress. "Consanguineous" relies on the "kinship" sense of "blood," bringing together "sanguis" with the Latin prefix "con-," meaning "with," to form a word used to describe two or more organisms that descend from the same ancestor.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....

basically i didn't see the attraction with it, it seems very staged or something to me. half the contestants looked like put-ons. i am stitching while this stuff is on so it never matters, i am generally not looking at the screen. she was happy bc she was able to chat with her school friends about it today. it conflicts with Mr. O, whom i do admit to enjoy watching, weird as that is.

Yes, they require it as part of PE. My daughter loves it and I could listen to the music all day and night and never get tired of it (unlike Nickelback...).

I'm certain the proxmity of the hot tub and a glass of consangriawithus had notong (er, nothing) to do with your intense feelings of warm cheer, but the dent seems concerned.

He really would like to check you over 9er, out) as soon as you're comfortable in your reclining bench (er, chair.)

Just as soon as Xena gets up however.

er ...

(Robt starts to answer the question. Xena (wisely) throttles him while the dent sits on him. Robt wishes it were the other way around.)

i should have rethought hypothesizing Katherine the Great as my ancestor! i had to google it bc i thought to myself, wait a minute didn't she....

I wondered if the Czarina's perversity was the result of some consanguineous horseplay. The European nobility was pretty inbred. Her husband Peter was a total dork. In fact, it is known he didn't even father her child.

Other than the placement of an s in front of the male pronoun, I can't see that it would make any difference. ;)
