Gary’s (Papa Smurf’s) interview with IGN TV.
Transcripts complements of “Trixiego” over on the Survivor Sucks website.

Piperpilot – About 2/3 of the way into the interview, Gary explains what happened to him on the island. Look for the bold and italics highlights.

IGN TV: How did you come to be on the show?

Gary: I just told my wife and my daughter, we got to make a video and send it in for me on Survivor. My wife is kind of a techno-geek so she's good at making tapes and she added the music to it and it worked, I got on.

IGN TV: What made you want to try out?

Gary: I've watched it since the very first show. It's always kind of something I wanted to do. My oldest daughter had tried and she made it to the finals for Africa. She got called to L.A. twice. So I said, well, I'll just give it a whirl. I can roll with just about anybody and we'll see what happens.

IGN TV: So you are a big fan?

Gary: Oh absolutely. Never missed a show since Richard Hatch was running around naked. (laughs) I could have missed that one show anyway.

IGN TV: What was your favorite season?

Gary: You know, that Africa one was really good. It was so harsh I think it was really good. And that's kind of the beauty of it, because of the harshness of it.

IGN TV: You guys didn't have it so harsh. What did you think of that?

Gary: (laughing) I kept telling when we were there, this is going to change. They're going to click it up somewhere. I don't know how or what or when, but you know it's going to happen. And then I kind of had my little ordeal with the bugs, where I got ate up and got sent out on that. But it was very interesting.

IGN TV: What were you thinking as all 19 of you were working together to build a shelter?

Gary: I was thinking about how they were going to divide it. The whole time I kept thinking, we're all building this and are we building this and we are all going to work together for a while. I thought we were all going to be together and then just every week someone had to get voted off. But then I thought, geez, that would take forever. You never know what is going through the producers minds. They are all kind of kicking it around. And I'm sure when that girl quit before it even started, that kind of changed their whole plans too.

IGN TV: Right, they had to do something with the 19th person. What did you think of how Sylvia got singled out there and that spelled her doom from the beginning?

Gary: I got lucky, actually, because Sylvia and I drew rocks to see who was going to pick the teams. They didn't show that, it ended up on the cutting room floor. But Jeff had us each pick rocks and Sylvia picked the white one and I picked the black one and because she picked the white rock, got to choose the teams.

IGN TV: So you were both singled out as being leaders?

Gary: I don't know if it was kind of the leaders, but we had a few disagreements with building the shelter. And that kind of got back to Jeff, so when we went to the challenge that day, he goes 'Gary and Sylvia, I hear you are having a little difficulty getting along.' I said 'not difficulty, we just got a couple questions.'

IGN TV: The age-old contractor versus architect debate I take it?

Gary: Well, it was kind of funny, because I do a lot of building and I deal with architects all the time and architects, I've always said, should have to build for five years before they be allowed to draw, because if they had to build them, they wouldn't draw what they draw. We get the prints out there and the prints that come to us, it says right on them, to plus or minus or to verify by the contractor on the job site. Well, if we have to plus or minus and verify, what are you guys doing? And we have a lot of things where we can't hang lumber in the air. You can when you draw it, but you can't when you build it. It isn't just Sylvia, architects, I've had a few difficulties with them. But Jeff had brought that up right away, so he had her and I pick those rocks. And you know how Jeff goes 'Sylvia is one of the leaders', everybody was shaking their head yes. Well Jeff had said 'Gary and Sylvia is' and that's why everybody was shaking their head.

IGN TV: And you were grateful she had to pick because she had to go to the losing team?

Gary: That's right. When I saw it at first, I thought it was kind of good. I didn't really want to pick because you can end up with enemies just by picking the team.

IGN TV: And then she had to join the losing team and they were mad at her because she picked that team.

Gary: Sylvia kind of dug a few of her own holes. She annoyed a lot of people. There was a set of blueprints, she would not let them go. And when you get really boisterous, you just put a huge target on your forehead. They asked had anybody done any building when we found out what we had to do, I said 'I've done a little bit, I can probably give you a hand with it.' I'm not going to say that I've built probably 1000 of these houses. That's not something that you do. You got to fly under the radar.

IGN TV: How do you think the show represented you and your personality?

Gary: I think I was represented as someone who, I mean I talked to everybody. Everybody seemed to get along with me. There's a couple I might not invite over for beers. I got along with everybody and that's part of the issue. In a situation where you are dealing with each other, you have to get along. I think I did it quite well. Being the Papa Smurf image is not all bad either.

IGN TV: Everyone seemed to genuinely care for you as well.

Gary: I think so. Cassandra and I got pretty close. I got pretty close with Dreamz. Earl and Anthony I got pretty close with, and Rita, when we were all together. It seemed like I didn't have any issues with anybody. Of course, you're not going to make everybody happy, but I always say, I keep telling my kids, you got to kill people with kindness.

IGN TV: So I understand it was the bug bites that took you out of the game?

Gary: Yeah. I got enough of them there to finally, and we looked on the internet, and if you go to insect bites with fire ants, it had every classic symptom of what I was going through. We had ant problems when we were laying on the deck. I think that's what it was. If you look at what a good fire ant bite will look like, I looked exactly like it. My legs looked like I was a goalie in a dart game and didn't wear shin pads. Sometimes if you get enough of them, it's going to take effect on you. The last four hours before I finally left, I don't remember part of it. It was such a dizzy, nauseating feeling, it was unbelievable. When I got the hospital, they gave me like 3 IV's and they gave me some kind of anti-toxin, and the minute I got that, maybe within an hour and a half, I started feeling better.

IGN TV: So what was your general opinion of the twist with the haves and have-nots?

Gary: Being on the haves, I thought it was pretty cool. If I'd have been on the have-nots, I'd have probably … but you know, they told us that everything you needed to get by, as far as food and things, was there. You just had to go out and find it. I don't know if it was just that hard, that they couldn't find it. But we had a lot of fruit too. Where we were, even if we wouldn't have won nothing, we had a lot of lemons, we had a lot of bananas, we had a lot of mangoes, we had some pau-pau. We had a lot of fruit. We had some small pineapples.

IGN TV: Why did you guys decide to get a second fishing kit after already having one?

Gary: I questioned that from the get-go, because we weren't even using the first one properly. And we got another one. And that one, I don't think if it ever even got unrolled. Where we were, you had to get up early and get around the peninsula, before the current and the tide moved in. And that wasn't being done. And once the tide and the current started coming, you were out of luck. We became way too complacent. When you are sitting there and you have two twenty-five pound bags of rice, and you got fruit and you got salt and you got everything you want, you are like, well why do we want to fish? And that was not good either.

IGN TV: What about the Exile Island twist this season with the idol being in camp?

Gary: What a deal. I guess if I was Sylvia, like she did last week, she tried to nonchalantly dig, I'd have been digging like a backhoe. But they will dig them deep.

IGN TV: Do you know where it is on your island after seeing the clues?

Gary: Oh, I could probably walk right up there and dig it right up. After the clues, I know exactly. To be honest with you, when we dug that shelter, we put one pole in and it bet the pole we put in was probably 3 ½ feet from where that thing is. I know I could go dig right there and dig it up right now.

IGN TV: Who do you hope wins the whole thing?

Gary: I was pretty close with Cassandra and Cassandra the first day said 'I don't like this out here, I don't want to do this' but I kept telling her to stay with it. We did a lot of talking. When you got nothing to do, you do a lot of talking. She's from such a diverse background. She's pretty well respected in the engineering community in UCLA, she's like the director over there, and then all of a sudden to go out there with a bunch of honky-tonks and trying to dig this hole and get by, she did very well. She was a very nice lady. So if she'd get there, I would feel good for her.

IGN TV: What did you think of the diversity of the casting this season?

Gary: It was very diverse. I had a lot of fun with it. Everybody just kind of got along. Like Edgardo, you wouldn't know he was a Latino, until you could hear him speak very fluent Spanish. It was definitely interesting.

IGN TV: What are you up to now?

Gary: I'll be going back to driving the bus on Monday and hopefully get a new Harley this spring and go riding. Trying to get Harley to give me one to promote for them guys for a year.

IGN TV: Any last words for America?

Gary: It was a great experience, I would do it tomorrow in a heartbeat. If they are putting together an All-Stars and they want someone who didn't get voted off and just wanted someone who went out with a medical, I could be here in a couple of hours. I'll make dang sure I'm laying where there aren't any ants near me.

thanks cuz! so far I have to say I am underwhelmed by this Survivor. There are too many people that we don't know anything about yet, and no one that really stands out. Except Dreamz who seems to be a train wreck.

The "haves" haven't really had to play the game yet and that makes it pretty boring.

As a fan who has watched every episode of every season, I hope it gets more interesting.

Tune in tonight at 8pm et/pt

The MOTO tribe (green buffs): Alex, Boo, Cassandra, Dre, Edgardo, Lisi and Stacy.

The RAVU tribe (orange buffs): Anthony, Earl, James, Michelle, Mookie, Rita and Yau-Man.

The Losers: Jessica, Erica, Sylvia, Gary, Liliana,

Good Morning Ladies and Gentlemen! It's Thursday, so that must mean it's time for your:

SURVIVOR PING ! ! !

The title of tonight's episode is "Love Many, Trust Few, Do Wrong to None!"

Since some of you have said that you don't read my weekly picks because you don't want the show spoiled, I will now "hide" my picks.

If you still want to read the weekly picks then start highlighting the remaining post at the arrow below:

---> The clues from the SeeBS website are as follows:

After both having endured Exile Island, two Survivors work together to find the Hidden Immunity Idol. Will this strategy pay off? Since Yau-Man and Earl are the only two that have been to exile island (now that Sylvia is gone) this clue is meaningless. Neither one of them has enough time to dig up the HII before the rest of the tribe knows what they are doing. Next!

Ravu fights for their choice of some desperately needed luxury items in a "winner takes all" Reward Challenge. Can they muster the strength to defeat Moto? They don’t call Ravu “The second coming of Ulong” for nothing. Ravu loses yet again. Next!

One tribe begins to splinter as some members treat others with blatant disrespect. This is the producers attempt to cast Moto in a bad light. This clue is meaningless. Next!

A mental challenge for Immunity confuses one Survivor, causing them to lose the challenge for their team. Rita loses it for Ravu resulting in her boot at Tribal Council.

The Reward Challenge appears to be some sort of “Kung-Foo / Sumo / knock your opponent off a raised platform” type pillow fight. As usual Moto wins.

The Immunity Challege will be some kind of puzzle/mind game which Moto wins yet again.

So there you have it:

Cuz’s Weekly Picks!

---> Reward Challenge Winner: Moto
Sent to Exile Island: Yau-Man
Immunity Challenge Winner: Moto
Voted out at Tribal Council: Rita

As usual, I’ll be back bright and early Monday morning with my recap.
So till then,

Take Care,

FReepmail me if you want added to (or removed from) the Survivor Ping List.

And there it is. I don't know anything about these folks and they all run into each other. Season 1, I knew each and every contestant but this time around I'm lucky to pick out Ya Man (sp?) and Rocky. If Dreamz isn't running his mouth, I doubt I could pick him out of the crowd. The editing spends far too much time on the ever more boring recycled challenges and not enough on the individual personalities.

Once again, thanks for your hard work on this thread, cuz.

The refusal to explain how a french press works to one's fellow tribe members seems very petty to me. I know it could be the editing crew who made it seem worse than it might have actually been, but it sure made Lisi, and what's her name look bad.

I was looking for Cassandra in the previews when Dreamz jumps ship. I know she'll jump, too, I just didn't see her.

Is this really supposed to be fun watching one team starve while one has everything win all the physical challenges? I know each of the tribal members of Ravu because I feel so bad for the physical deterioration but couldn't tell you anything about Moto. Wish I could ask Jeff if they really wanted to emaciate one group while fattening another to win every challenge?

Why is Yau-Man (there is probably some misspelling there) still in the game?

Also, the sleazy lawyer actually showed some compassion this episode. Lisi and Michelle are jerks. Coffee isn't such a great beverage, anyway (they should have offered soda--though that could just help accelerate the rotting of their teeth).

Sort of surprising that Anthony survived the vote.

Rocky should have already gone, too--though basically that's because he's loudmouth.

And why did Earl give Yau-man the opportunity to look for the [pagan statuette]? It was a kind gesture, but wouldn't he (Earl) want to use it?

For the "concentration" challenge, both teams did it sort of sloppily. Especially since the numbers/words were arranged in tidy, neat rows.

And for the sumo challenge, Yau-man was put into a sort of predicament. A was faced with either: pushing (not quite hitting, but still) a girl; or losing to a girl.

Could be a bit misogynist, but culturally against hitting some random girl, and culturally it would be sort of embarrassing for a guy to lose to a girl in a physical competition.

They had a non-physical challenge this episode.

Agree that there should have been more to level the playing field.

Bummer! No Survivor next week due to basketball. I hate basketball!

Next time on SURVIVOR: FIJI

When Jeff says, "Drop your buffs," the tribes face a major shake-up that changes the game.

· Survivor will be preempted on Thursday, March 15 due to NCAA Basketball.

· The next episode of Survivor, which will air on a special night, Wednesday, March 21, at 8pm et/pt.

Guessing that the immunity [pagan statuette] being buried deep at the entrance to the camp is so that it has to be a team effort--and then one of the members gets the chance to use it.

So fire ants were the end of Gary. Who knew?

I'm so allergic that even one fire ant bite sends me to the hospital...I've been to Fiji however, and never encountered one there --at deluxe resorts anyway. Was Gary the eliminatee last night March 8? Or was someone else voted out? I fell asleep early in the game and slept right through Grey's Anatomy too, which is increasingly a Desperate Doctors show. Losing its charm altogether.

Anyone here watching Heroes? Have you seen it? It's my must see tv this season along with Amazing Race.

I realize the "concentration" game may not have been physical but when your brain is starved for glucose any activity requiring concentration (and walking) is too-lopsided to be fun to watch. I was just cringing at the Ravu members trying to remember where numbers were placed, they had difficulty making a mnemonic device for recall and once they walked out onto the playing field they were lost.
