WORD FOR THE DAY, TUESDAY, JANUARY 17, 2007, VULNERABLE
Merriam-Webster | 1/19/07 | Slip 18

Tuesday, January 16, 2007, Tuesday, VULNERABLE

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of “word for the day”. Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the “word of the day”; in a sentence. The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day. Practice makes perfect.....post on....

Subbie Slip has her whip, handcuffs and legcuffs today. Tomorrow I’m bringing in chains, so beware.

The rest of the stuff is locked up in my drawer. I’m just letting all the new students know that we behave as if we were ladies and gentlemen in here. Those two words “as if” can get you an A if you make the subbie laugh.

VULNERABLE

Pronunciation: ‘vul/ner/a/’bal (I think)
Function: adjective
Etymology: Late Latin vulnerabilis, from Latin vulnerare to wound, from vulner-, vulnus wound; probably akin to Latin vellere to pluck, Greek oulE wound

1 : capable of being physically or emotionally wounded
2 : open to attack or damage : ASSAILABLE (vulnerable to criticism)
3 : liable to increased penalties but entitled to increased bonuses after winning a game in contract bridge

You may use all the “vulnerables” you choose, such as “invulnerable,” invulnerabless,” you know, those kinds of words, and you will get a grade.

I have a Band-Aide on my right index finger, so please forgive me if I give you a rotten grade.

It started spitting rain on my way home from taking the kids to school --- but it is far to warm for snow.....SIGH.

For so long as our government continues to employ a politically correct approach to the cult of Islam, we remain vulnerable to terrorism.

I feel such sympathy for you and your missspellings.

Perhaps you should get a long-haired dictionary.

Yeppers.

SA (like Atlanta) closes down when ice/snow fall. Dallas & Fort Worth seem to manage much better.

Doesn't matter how much, they just shut down.

Now Houston, on the other hand, ....

It is around 26 degrees here in DFW, but no more precip. Our roads were pretty clear this morning.

It rained from Saturday until Monday night, when it turned to snow. If it had been cold enough, we would have had over a foot of snow, instead of just a few inches. It's only been cold enough to snow since late last night.

Security flaws have left our country vulnerable to attacks from China, Iran, and just about any country on the planet with a few bucks and the right connections.

When I got out of class last night it was in the low 40s and still raining. This morning we have snow, still coming down too. Not more than a few inches though.

I do not envy you.

All the girls talked about in the car this morning was the dreaded "S" word and how much they want lots of it. I informed them if we get it they better find someone else to take them to school because it won't be me :)

(Robt looks (for an) innocent dictioneary.)

Somehow I doubt that you could come up with an expression of innocence, even in a dictionary.
