CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- The Carolina Panthers fired offensive coordinator Dan Henning and two other assistants Monday, two weeks after finishing a disappointing 8-8 season.
Offensive line coach Mike Maser and secondary coach Rod Perry were also let go.
"This is a very difficult decision because these coaches have played an integral role in the success we have experienced since coming to the Panthers," coach John Fox said. "They were part of a Super Bowl and two NFC championship games and those accomplishments would not have been possible without their contributions."
The Panthers struggled on offense and failed to make the playoffs, hurt in part by numerous injuries on the offensive line. But Henning's playcalling also came under question as Carolina struggled to run and get the ball to receiver Steve Smith.
A successful coach like Fox - been to a Super Bowl and last year's NFC Championship game - gets to make this move to keep his job another year. Another 8 - 8 season though and he'll be out too.
Marty Schottenheimer?
If Shotty is fired he'll be snatched up right quick. He's not the Chargers' problem, imo.
Many years ago there was a Panthers Head Coach who refused to let a player play in a big game cause he had missed curfew or some such.
Any idea who that coach was and is he still coaching? I've long admired him for taking that stance and not giving in to the pressure.
I just hope no one hires Matt Millen away from the Lions...
Millen is pure genius...probably will grab another receiver in the 1st round once again.
Well there are two top flight WR in the draft.
Maybe Capers will return to the Steelers???
Did Fox hire these assistants?
If yes shouldn't he go also?
I'm a bit surprised by this. Off. line and Def. backfield were the areas most affected by injuries.
Not the least bit surprised by Henning firing(even though Fox defended him only a couple weeks ago.)
Did Fox hire these assistants?
Yes.
After 2007 season-Coughlin will be fired, Fox will go back to Giants, Cowher will go to Carolina.
