(vanity) I'm a "24" neophyte. Help!

I have never watched the TV show "24" before, but I plan to finally get on board this season.

What do I need to know before I start?

Am I going to be hopelessly lost when I watch tonight?

i have never watched it. i am working when it is on. i would be hooked so i do not want to watch any episodes. i might just buy the dvd's. shows like that do not seem to require knowing any back story. they will tell you everything you need to know in the first 5 minutes.

As long as you watch from the first hour of the new season you'll be fine. I jumped in on the third season halfway through and still got hooked. There are lots of episode guides out there if you want to look for previous relationships as you get more familiar with the characters. Each season is a self-contained story, though frequently ending on a cliff-hanger note leaving you wanting more (such as the last one leaving Jack on a slow boat to China).

As the show's name implies, each season is a single day, consisting of 24 episodes. It runs in "real time" for that day. Certain liberties are taken, such as cell phones that are never low on battery or signal.

Good luck!

I'm new to it, but I intend to watch it tomorrow night. I hear that the competent, real world woman Cloe, that so many of us dig, has been polished up, and put up front.

You will be fine. If you can go to your local library and borrow Season 1. That way you can skip through the repeat parts and get all of it in say, twelve hours.

They are interesting and exciting. The nay sayers later in this thread who are disparaging 24 are slightly off base. 24 is watched by several million people and the series has been bought on DVD by millions more.

Enjoy.

Oh, I should have thought about that. Because we all know that watching a television drama series is key to defeating the Muslim Mass Murderers and their sympathizers. That's preposterous.

I'd also be very interested to learn just exactly how watching a TV show helps in the WOT, as well.

For most people ,but, if you have watched the last 120 episodes you pick up on little things that makes more sence of the current episode. Hence the live 24 thread gives more insight by FReepers explaining or bringing to light why something was said or done. Since you said you have never watched it how could you possibly know anything about the show?

For most of us who are informed a TV show is just that, entertainment. Watching 24 is like reading a novel,if you skip over a chapter or episode the story loses a lot. It does bring to light the threat of terrorism to those that may not follow the news like we do.About the only other series I watch on TV is Sleeper Cell. The 8 episodes that aired this fall were in my opinion done quite well and showed exactly what militant islam is all about.

Rent the videos. No ads and you can't start at the beginning.

Me and my wifey are now mid 3rd season. We're very glad we didn't start in the middle.

Just sit back and enjoy...the show will tell you what you need to know.

There is a live thread during the show as well...it's distracting but great fun.

DO go rent the past seasons or buy what you can get from iTunes.

Sheesh, I completely forgot it was on tonight. Thank you for the thread! LOL. You'll catch on fairly easily. I didn't start watching it until many seasons in and I caught on quickly.

Yeah don't do it. You will have to give up all sense of reality.
You will have to refer to the actors by their character names, "Jack did this", "Chloe is such a babe",etc.
You will have to refer to people who watch other tv shows as losers and tell them to get a life.
You will spend mucho dollars getting the dvd's and missing work or your kids birthdays to watch them.
But hey since Rush and Laura are big 24 fans its ok. :-)

Although you can watch starting this season, it would really help if you had watched from the beginning. There are constantly references to past seasons which you won't get. You should tape this season, but go out and rent the first 5 seasons before watching this season.
