AN AMD panellist here in Vegas thinks that it will reach sixteen cores software programming within five years. This will be in time for the Playstation 4, the new Xbox and Geforce G2012 or Radeon whaetever they will want to call it.
The next move for 2007 is to get to software quad core optimised. After that, it will go exponential and move to sixteen cores. Software should be threaded to exploit sixteen cores in the next five years, the AMD spinner spun.
Intel didnt talk about any future plans apart from software stuff where the games need to get better and use hardware more efficiently.
But heavy multi-threading is the future for both DAAMIT, and Intel. In fact, even Nvidia agrees, for once. They'll argue about the number of cores and the time-frame, but they're barking up the same tree.
Megahurtz don't matter - now it's all about the number of cores.

AMD, ATI Merge to Form DAAMIT
By Brian Briggs
Sunnyvale, CA - AMD CEO Hector Ruiz said that with the merger of AMD with ATI the new company would be called DAAMIT.
"We wanted to keep the letters from each company, but didn't like the looks of AMDATI. It lacks imagination. Our marketing team found DAAMIT appealed most to our focus groups," said Ruiz.
Ruiz noted that DAAMIT is an ancient Incan word meaning "fleet of foot, speedy." He said, "That's the kind of company that we want to be."
A representative from Intel chuckled when told of the new name, "We applaud this as a bold move by the company. We can't wait to see what they do next."
Customers were pleased by the move. "That's what I usually say when I load new drivers on my system, so it seems appropriate," said Kyle Westfall of Wausau, Wisconsin.
