Combination of next new iPod and fabled iPhone. Looks nice, but too big. Apple has been leading the way in UI design lately but this thing is just too big.

I'm disappointed they hooked up with Cingular again.

UI design and physical design are two different things.
And it's barely bigger than a person's grip. It's fine.

160 pixels per inch.
You can watch TV shows on it.
Look at photos on it.
Sync to your computer.
Surf the net.
E-mail.

CNBC has been carrying some of MacWorld.
The phone is BEAUTIFUL. Great industrial design. No buttons and great graphics. Thin and transluscent.
I understand it was delayed (as long a 2 years) due to Apple trying to get a really robust phone into what is basically an iPod.

Cingular's got the largest customer base--it's a no-brainer. That said, they'll definitely offer deals with other companies. First, they'll have to; second, the on-screen display specifically lists which carrier you're using, which implies that multiple carriers are supported. If you don't want to wait, Cingular lets you unlock phones if you can prove that you paid full retail for it.
As a T-Mobile user, I can't wait to pick one of these up.

Well, I'd disagree with this.
And it's barely bigger than a person's grip. It's fine.
Despite being thin, the width and height look similar to other PDA phones that have been limited in popularity by their size. I think it will be a moderate hit as the successor to the video iPod, but a failure as a phone.

I am totally stunned. I am sick and tired of crappy "smartphones" that aren't so smart or easy to use.
As soon as we find out availability, I'm buying two of these.
To: AnotherUnixGeek
Now THAT is a sexy phone.
To: Terpfen
I have the Tmobile service too.

Put your thumb and index finger ON THE SCREEN and pinch them together to make the image smaller - spread them apart to make it bigger.
How cool is that?

Why will it fail as a phone? Because it can fit in a pocket? Come on, I think you're lingering too much on the fact that it's slightly larger than someone's grip.

It's launching with Cingular. It'll come to other carriers. You can also get an unlocking code from Cingular if you prove you paid full retail for it.

but this thing is just too big. That's too big? Phones have been getting so small lately that it seems to be small for the sake of small, ending up being far too small. I am uncomfortable using most of the cell phones made today -- my hand didn't get smaller, and neither did the distance between my ear and my mouth. This is the epitome of an ergonomic cell phone for its time, but it could use a modern re-interpretation due to advanced tech, maybe a bit slimmer, full screen underneath the slide, cool UI:
