Burt Bacharach's daughter commits suicide

Fri Jan 5, 2006

The only child of pop songwriter Burt Bacharach and actress Angie Dickinson has committed suicide after a lifetime struggling with a form of autism, a spokeswoman for the former couple said on Friday.

Nikki Bacharach, 40, died "quietly and peacefully" at her home in the northern Los Angeles municipality of Thousand Oaks on Thursday night, a statement said.

The spokeswoman declined to specify the cause of death.

She was diagnosed with Asperger Syndrome following her premature birth in 1966, and her father recounted her struggles that year in the song "Nikki." Sufferers often have obsessive routines and extreme sensitivity to sounds, smells and tastes.

Her parents, who divorced in 1980, had no other children together.

Bacharach, 78, who with Hal David composed such songs as "What the World Needs Now Is Love" and "Alfie," has three children from subsequent marriages.

Dickinson, 75, is probably best known for her role as sultry Sgt. Suzanne "Pepper" Anderson in the 1970s cop show "Police Woman."

If I hadn't heard the rumor that Angie had pursued a sexual encounter with the Impeached President Clinton - I would be saddened to hear my former fantasy was 75!

Damn, I'm getting old.

More proof that money by itself doesn't make you happy. Many people fantasize about becoming wealthy or perhaps being heir to a fortune but there are many sad and unhappy people in these situations, even those who are not autistic.

As one with a mild case of Asperger's, I can relate to the isolation this woman must have felt. But at least I had to get out in the world and overcome it. Maybe being wealthy and living in mansions enhanced that isolation and prevented her from having a normal life.

Wow, Reuters just plagiarized Wikipedia!

Compare the following:

Reuters:

Dickinson, 75, is probably best known for her role as sultry Sgt. Suzanne "Pepper" Anderson in the 1970s cop show "Police Woman."

Wikipedia:

Angie Dickinson (born September 30, 1931) is a famous American television and film actress who is probably best-known for her role as sultry Sgt. Suzanne "Pepper" Anderson of the popular 1970s crime drama, Police Woman.

How embarrassing!

......... saddened to hear my former fantasy was 75! Damn, I'm getting old.

We have reached the point in life where Image Googling the women of our fondest adolescent fantsies brings about an urge to put a nice warm blanket over their shoulders rather than an urge to get under the blankets with them.

Lyrics to "Nikki":

Somewhere there is sunshine.
Somewhere days are warm.
Somewhere there's a happy harbor
far from the storm.
Out where the sun shines there is someone
I'm meant to adore,
and I know the day I find her,
I'll smile once more.

Nikki, it's you.
Nikki, where can you be?
It's you, no one but you for me
I've been so lonely since you went away.
I won't spend a happy day
'til you're back in my arms.

For ev'ry dream there is a dreamer,
and when dreams are gone,
for each wish
another star shines to wish up on.
Take all my dreams and all my wishes
Hold them in your heart.
Tell me soon we'll be together,
never to part.

Nikki, it's you.
Nikki, where can you be?
It's you, no one but you for me
I've been so lonely since you went away.
I won't spend a happy day
'til you're back in my arms.

Don't make me wait here in the shadows
till my life is done.
I can't live without the sunshine,
you are the sun.

Oh Nikki, it's you.

I didn't realize that people with Asperger's had these kinds of struggles. My 17 year old son has a good friend who has Asperger's and he has come so far along since we first met him that it's almost hard to notice it anymore. This is just so sad.

Why do I see so many musical geniuses having autistic children?? Beverly Sills comes to mind and the music teachers from here also have one.

Sad to read, but how would anyone know she died "quietly and peacefully" from suicide?

Okay, now wait-a-minute...due to the age difference here, are you sure you're not mixing up Presidents who liked actresses? Dickenson was supposed to have been connected to JKF (the real one).FYI: I've seen her in LA. Lovely woman, but she's a little round of figure now and definitely not William Jefferson's type.

Yeah, that's what I was wondering. And I don't know how I'd quantify a suicide by an autistic person in the first place. I guess I don't know exactly what Asperger's Syndrome is. What a sad story, either way.

It says Burt had 3 subsequent children after Nikki. What about Angie?
