This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

New folk and occasional posters, jump right in and introduce yourselves, tell us about your horses, and post pictures if you've got them!
The storms missed us this time. Cav and I are in the NW corner of the state and all the death and destruction happend in the SW corner. We did have tornado warnings off and on and the roof got blown off of one lady's garage, but that was nothing compared to what those other poor people had. There were 8 students killed at Enterprise High School and a few others in the surrounding area. They said that the tornado that went through there was 800 YARDS wide. Now that's a big one, by anybody's standards. I always do a lotta praying on days that we're suppsed to have weather like that.
I'm glad to hear that the old mare is well and accounted for. She's earned a cushy retirement!
I'm glad to hear that your sister's surgery went well. I know that's a load off of everyone's shoulders in your whole family. I also appreciate your prayers for our little bit of bad weather. I'm sure they helped, just as I'm sure that all our prayers for a successful outcome for your sister's surgery helped her too. Prayers really do work!
Good luck with the farrier today! The questions sound like good ones. Be sure to take before-and-after shots of all 4 feet. It'll give you something to look back on as his feet hopefully start to get better.
Well, I'm having an interesting day here at work. All of our lights have gone out in my lab. I have power, just no lights. And I'm typing to you folks in complete darkness. Can't do anything till they come back on. I vote that we go home early!
The questions sound great, see where the conversation goes.... What time?
Great news on the surgery! I thought about your sister all day.
Oh, Duchess .. your colt is so cute .. (You'd of thought mama woulda shared some of that color, huh? ) *g*
Well, I'm not horseless anymore!
I had 2 horses (a mare and filly - Arabian) delivered from OHIO Monday morning. (some of you on horse.com may know this already)
They are settling in well and I got on the mare for a few minutes yesterday with a halter and leadrope .. they really are nice horses.
I'll probably post questions and/or issues over "here" to avoid the busybodies over "there" .. lol
I've taken a few pics (not digital) but they are such pocket ponies that it's hard to get them far enough away to actually take pics .. Should have some to post this weekend.
Hey - cool!
I guess I haven't made the connection before... who are you "over there?"
Looking forward to the pictures!
Well isn't that strange about the lights. You'd think that if they didn't have power that nothing else would either. But then again, it may be something as simple as a tripped breaker. Sounds like nap-time to me! ;o)
Congrats about the new horses! That's so exciting! I'm really looking forward to the pics! Can you post the link from Horse.com so that we can go over there and read more about them?
Farrier has come and gone.
He did say the horse was not level at all in any feet....He showed me somethings You know how the coronet band grows around the top of the hoof. It should be in a straight line all around. On Harley's feet he has curves in the band towards the back...This guy says that is called "jammed heels" are like having in grown toe nails. Can make a horse ouchy. Harley had that in all 4 feet to some degree or other... Anyone ever hear of this? He said it was from the horse being trimmed unlevel.
He said I should not loose any shoes now, but the soreness could take as much as a month to clear up. I should continue to ride him, bute him if the soreness seems bad, but don't ride for long periods or hard till it does clear up.
He did some different things, he used an electric grinder to round off the edges of the overhang to keep him from stepping on it, he put a smaller shoe, and we talked about the type of shoe, and he recommended I go with a regular shoe, they have more support...He does/can shoe with NB, but said for the expense of the shoe lets try this first, then try the NB if this doesn't work.
I'll get pictures later, I have JP here right now.
Becky
Sounds good, I have seen the farriers on the farrier forum speak to the coronet band and balance issues.
What do you think? Think you're gonna be on the right track now?
Well, I hope this puts you back on track! Good luck and keep us posted, though I know that you will. ;-)
Well, I'm glad to hear that he thinks he's got a handle on the problem. I'll be interested to see the pictures.
I think at this point I'm just in a wait and see phase.
I'm considering asking over there on the hoof forum, if anyone has heard of "jammed heels", I've never heard that before.
Becky
Sure... I'd like to see the discussion.... they'll want pictures.
Oh, I'm not giving them pictures, or any history of Harley:) call me a coward...I just want to know if/what they say about the term :)
I really don't need any more opinions thrown at me...I'm confused enough about what's going on with this horse.
Becky
Well, I'm not sure they'll have much to say without pictures... but I understand if you don't want to open up any more cans of worms.
