The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Oh, one more thing you may find interesting and you may not. I think I'd told you a while back that I was transitioning Grace to barefoot after I got her back from the trainer's last summer, but her feet hadn't been in good enough shape to try it until now. I had ridden her barefoot on the back feet last Fall, but the fronts still weren't up to par then so I continued to use the boots on the fronts while I worked on them. But the last time I trimmed them I thought they looked ready, so I decided that Saturday was the day, since I was with considerate friends who would cut me some slack if it didn't work out. But it worked out great. She floated like a feather, with no shoes, no boots, no nuthin. She never took a gimpy step or bobbed her head a time and her gait was actually better than it had ever been, even though the trail was fairly rocky. Now granted, we only rode 10 or 15 miles and didn't ride down any gravel roads, so it wasn't any Iron Horse kinda test, but her feet looked just as good when we got back as when we left, and I was pleased with the overall results so far. I plan on trying her on some gravel roads soon (with the boots in the saddle bags as a backup of course) so I'll let you know "The Rest of the Story" as it develops.

That's great! Good for her! And you.... I wouldn't like messing with the boots.

Yeah, they are a pain to get on, and they did make her gait rougher, but they're a life-saver when you're trying to go from shoes to barefoot.

I'm not going to try doing that with any of the other horses just yet, because my experiment is still on-going, and I want to make sure that I have at least one horse that I can ride ANYWHERE, but it definately showed me that it's possible, at least for the level of riding that I do, and with the horse that I have. If I can ride her barefoot for 20 or 25 miles over gravel roads and she still goes as good as she would if she were shod, THEN I'll be convinced that it really works.

First great pictures from both of you:)...

Frog, that is great that she is transitioning so well to barefoot. Keep us updated:)

Are you still reading that thread about the western pleasure horse on the horse.com forum? That woman is a riot!

Oh for heaven's sake, she's a kid! She's talking about having to "ask her mom" about something. Sure explains why she freaked when no one fell head over heels in love with that horse.

It is a lovely horse, though. Head is still too low and her stirrups are too short for western pleasure.

A girl ran into the back of that new truck today. Messed her car up but just took some chrome of the ball. Guess I can drive it now:')

I've been driving hubby's hunting truck since last Thursday when my car died. Tomorrow he's going to have to take me to work, we've got snow and ice now and I refuse to drive a pick-up in that.

Thanks. I'm having trouble with mine too. I still drive it but the AC isn't working and the alarm keeps going off. Looks like winter is over here and I'm not complaining:')

No, last time I checked the camera she was eating. I should have paid bills tonight but just couldn't get up the energy for it.

Inch or so of snow and ice here.

Are you taking antibiotics? I woke up about an hour and a half ago - alarm clock to check the mare and just can't get back to sleep. Ought to be an interesting day at work tomorrow :)

No. I really haven't felt too bad, just tired but better. Same stuff everyone else has had. I just am having trouble lecturing.

Do you have any sick time? Maybe tomorrow would be a good day to call in, esp if you have been up all night.
