The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread! - Thread 11

Posted on 01/02/2007 9:57:39 AM PST by HairOfTheDog

The FreeRepublic Saddle Club - (very out of date) Who's Who *pics*

This is a horse chat thread where we share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the previous threads we have had a great time talking through lessons, training, horse lamenesses, illnesses and pregnancies... and always sharing pictures and stories.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and MissTargets will now be pinging everyone most mornings. Let MissTargets and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the previous threads, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Here's a picture of the bricks I put in around the patio. Other then putting some frap that had collected on the patio, that's about all I accomplished today.

Good Morning.

Becky, the patio looks good!

Gloomy and raining. At least we didn't get the big snow.

Getting rain here... which would be good for my grass seed IF the temps would come up a few degrees.

Good morning! Horses are staying in an awful lot... I think they barely left the barn yesterday, with this come and go setup. I'm gonna boot them out to pasture if they don't venture out this morning.

G'mornin Becky! The patio bricks look great, and not only that, they'll help hold the dirt back off the concrete too. I've done a little more work on my raised stone bed here lately too. The front wall was a little uneven. It was 2 or 3 inches lower on one end than the other, but it's kinda hard to level up when you're working with rocks that are 6 to 10 inches thick, so I finally just went and got some more rocks and reworked that end and it's more level now. I'll try to get a picture of it this evening. My yellow pansies are really looking pretty now that we've had some warm days in the last few weeks. I'm really looking forward to the spring planting season too.

BladeRider and I did manage to get in a nice ride on Saturday but it took us a while to get started because we had to head back to camp when we were about 10 minutes out because it started thundering and lightening right on top of us. Then, just as we got back to the trailers, it started to HAIL. Pea-sized hail! So we loaded all the horses back up in the trailer stood in there with them because it was really coming down. For about 5 minutes there it sounded like somebody was dumping a load of gravel on the trailer, but then it stopped, and it never did another thing after that, so we headed out again and ended up having a really nice ride. My buddy Shirley rode with us and since none of us had ridden very much since before Thanksgiving, we just took it easy and even stopped and did a little exploring. I always like to do that when the leaves are off the trees. You can just see so many more things.

I saw where you'd gotten quite a bit of wind this past weekend. It must have just kept on going because it got pretty bad here too by Saturday evening. It was a little nerve wracking there for a while, listening to the wind whipping around the house, and the trees were swaying bad enough that we moved all the cars out into the middle of the back yard where nothing could fall on them. But it calmed down by midnight so we were finally able to relax and get some sleep. Yesterday was really nice and sunny but it was still pretty darned windy and you just couldn't stand to be out there for long. I did go out there for a little while and sat on a log out in the pasture and petted little Miss Whirl, Bluebell's filly. She followed me back up from the barn, all by herself, after I carried a manure fork down there. She's about the most people-oriented baby I've ever had. She stood there and let me scratch her and gave me horse-kisses for about 15 minutes before I wimped out and went to the house. I finally broke down and bought a new camera, a 6.1mp Kodak V610 with a 10x optical zoom, so I tried it out while I was out there. I can never get her far enough away from me to get anything but eyes and nostrils, but I did manage to hold it at arms length and get a couple of self-portraits. Sadly they show my profile, so you'll just have to excuse the turkey waddle under my chin! I'll post some pics from the ride in just a minute.

Good Morning to you too! I know what you mean about forcing the horses out of the barn. I've had to shut mine out too, at least during the day when it's nice out, because with that hay ring in there, this is all they do...

It's a 24hr buffet and they're getting kinda fat!

LOL....nice pictures:) I like them.

My pansies survived the ice, but look a bit weary. I think they will perk up tho, with the sun, and I'm going to Miracle Grow them today.

I would like to take up the sidewalk and put down some sheeting to keep the grass from growing between the bricks. There is also one spot where the blocks sunk in a bit and water and dirt collect on them, I could level that up...but it sure seems like a big job:) I'm thinking about it tho, first step.

That's really a great idea to put your hay ring in the barn like that. I'd like to use round bales but them being out in the weather worries me. Draw backs to both way....That would be a big job to keep mucked out, and it does encourage them to stay IN the barn, which is a two edged sword.

Becky

Hey, did you ever listen to the Rod Stewart Collection? Did you like it?

I'm cleaning house and freeping and listening to them, and reminded me to ask....IMO, they make even cleaning house more pleasant:)

No, believe it or not, it'd be pretty hard to do, even with my bunch of trough-waders. The way those v-shaped dividers are spaced, there's barely enough room for me to put my foot between them when I have to climb in there. They eat it down on the front side and when it gets low, I have to get in there with the fork and move it forward from the back or they can't get to it. The 4 of them will go through a roll in about 2 weeks if allowed 24-7 access. It'll last 3 weeks or so if I shut them out 4 or 5 days a week.

Oh, dear...I think I goofed:) I read the original post and responded before reading the prior responses. I don't think the poster is going to like my critique:)

This might be interesting:)

...That would be a big job to keep mucked out...

It was at first, and it still is SOMETIMES, but I THINK crosses fingers they're finally getting the idea that they're supposed to poop outside. I've been keeping it forked out twice a day for the last month or so and spreading all the manure in one area off to one side of the barn and they've kinda started to go out there. There's still the isolated pile in there, but I'm not getting two wheelbarrow loads a day out of there like I was at first. Now you watch, they'll prove me a liar tomorrow! ;o)

If she hangs around... I don't think she feels all that welcomed. I think she thought everyone would like it, but peanut rolling appears to be one of the issues just about everyone hates now.

HA! Do you know that you've apparently become a quotable celebrity over there? CowPuncher has quoted you in his/her tagline...

Riding in a halter is sloppy at best.....It's like learning to play piano in boxing gloves. It may be an exercise in patience, but refined and precise and ~delicate~, it'll never be." --Washington Bay

We're not worthy! ;o)

but a very good point!
