A game of reverse Russian roulette early Thursday in a South Bexar County home ended with an 18-year-old woman dead and a man behind bars after he was charged with firing the fatal shot, authorities said. Abel Arthur Lozano, 20, was at Bexar County Jail on Thursday, charged with murder. His bond was set at $50,000.
The Bexar County medical examiner's office identified the woman as Amanda Studymire of San Antonio.
Studymire and another woman were visiting Lozano at his grandmother's home in the 4200 block of Deborah Kay, said sheriff's Lt. Dale Bennett. Studymire lived one block to the north.
Investigators said the three had engaged in a game of reverse Russian roulette using a .357-caliber Magnum revolver. Rather than point the gun at their own heads, participants point the weapon at other people, according to Bennett.
Details of what happened are unclear.
When officers arrived after receiving a call for a shooting around 3 a.m., Lozano was standing in the driveway holding the revolver. He claimed not to know the gun was loaded but admitted he was playing with it, the lieutenant said.
Officers found Studymire in the home, dead from an apparent gunshot wound to the neck, according to a sheriff's news release.
The suspect was arrested without incident.
A witness told deputies that Lozano pulled the gun off a living room table, pointed it at Studymire and fired.
Lozano said he was about 15 feet away from Studymire when he pointed the gun at her and accidentally shot her, Bennett said. Evidence indicates the suspect stood much closer to the victim.
The witness also said they commonly engaged in the game, Bennett said.
Because Lozano's version of events conflicted with the witness' account and because investigators believe he fired the weapon that killed Studymire, authorities believed he should be charged with murder, Bennett said.
Darwin award nominee!
No way substance abuse was a factor here.
And clearly not for the better.
This isn't breaking news any more. A few years ago maybe, but this should be in the stupid file.....
They must have been watching reruns of "The Deer Hunter." Real dummies play Russian Roulette with an automatic.
Would think if they "commonly" engaged in the game that the officers, EMT's, coroner, etc. would've been there before.
I sure didnt think THAT would happen
"The witness also said they commonly engaged in the game, Bennett said."
Amazing. I prefer flight sim games, but to each his own.
There's dirt in that thar gene pool!
In other words, murder.
Does reverse Russian Roulette mean that you just take one cartridge out of its chamber?
Give them credit for using a revolver, not a semi-auto.
;-)
Basing my assumption on the title, I thought I was going to read an article about a Darwin Awardee who changed the rules of Russian roulette by loading 5 rounds and leaving only one empty cylinder.
I'm convinced none of the participants were under the influence of alcohol or any other controlled substance./sarc/
Stupidity doesn't detract from the fact that a human being was killed. Prayers for the deceased and family.

Riiiiight.
"Real dummies play Russian Roulette with an automatic."
Happy New Year, CJ.
The secret to a long reign as champion is winning the coin flip to see who goes first.

Impossible. Substance abuse is a victimless crime.
>> he pointed the gun at her and accidentally shot he <<
This was NO accident. There are NO accidents when it comes to firearms...just negligence.
With the proliferation of crack and meth, there is no end to these stupid criminal stories. There is no stupidity threshold when people stay awake for days on end high on that crap. And then there's that percentage that act like that when they drink alcohol...
How utterly Darwinian!!
