I went to a game at the Forum that year. Wilt was incrdible. He would jump up for a rebound and the other big men would fall off of him like crumbs. Then he'd fire the ball like a softball down to Goodrich or Riley on the break, all the way from basket to basket.
I firmly believe that Wilt would have had Shaq crying like a baby, he was so strong.
Actually, that started with Julius Irving. The fans love the acrobatics, so traveling is no longer an offense if the play is spectacular.
Yeah, his basketball nickname was "Dr. Scholl".
They are very interesting to watch. Not a whole lot of razzle dazzle or ego trips, just good, solid basketball. If everyone stays healthy, they have a shot.
I am particularly impressed by their workmanlike attitude. They don't get down when they're down. They also play good defense at the end of the fourth quarter.
Their lack of killer instinct is worrisome, though. Everyone kows that being down by 25 against the Suns means that it will be a close finish.
I followed every game on TV. Lew was amazing.

He sure was. That was the first year ('71) I got into basketball, and my dad had season seats at the Forum. Things were a lot more relaxed back then -- I used to hang out near the basket during pre-game shoot-arounds with other youngins and occasionally players would chat with us. ....a very good-natured scene.
The only guy in the league Wilt couldn't easily push around was Wes Unseld of the Bullets. Wes was short for a center at 6'7", but built like a tank. (Jabbar couldn't get near the basket when he played against Unseld, so he ended up shooting a bunch of 10+ foot skyhooks. .....many of which found the bottom of the net, of course).
Wilt could do it all. ....except shoot free throws. (He should've stuck with his early-career underhand style). One year he decided to dish off the ball more, and he ended up leading the league in assists. But his most amazing stat, imo, is his 23 rebounds per game career average!

They say Walton did not play for the USA 1972 Olympic basketball team beause he was oppsed to the war in Vietnam. I think if he had been on that team we would have won by a bunch. I always remember hating UCLA as a kid.
Yeah that Jordan guy did nothing in the '90s. Not worth watching at all. /sarc
IMHO, the NBA sucks. It's streetball on national TV.
