Olive Branch's Smith charged with possession

Ole Miss football commitment Cannon Smith was released from the Collierville Jail on a $7,500 bond Friday morning after being charged Thursday night with speeding and possession of ecstasy.

Smith, 19, a senior quarterback at Olive Branch High whose given name is Frederick B. Smith, was driving a 2005 Mercedes late Thursday in Collierville when he was pulled over by police, Collierville Police Chief Larry Goodwin said late Friday night.

An 18-year-old male passenger in the car was charged with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Goodwin said the passenger was released Friday morning on a $750 bond.

Smith, an Army All-American and Best of the Preps finalist for Offensive Player of the Year, committed to Ole Miss earlier this month.

Rated the No. 70 quarterback prospect nationally by Scout.com, Smith is the son of FedEx founder Frederick W. Smith.

Smith is scheduled to participate in the Jan. 6 Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio.

Good question. I graduated at age 17. But I was on the debate team, not football.

It would be nice to think that the school would drop him now, but I doubt that will happen. I am remembering the tooth-and-nail court battle that Ole Miss put up this past summer to get the illiterate tackling machine, Jerrell Powe, they signed last year declared academically eligible.

Things like academics, integrity and character are great buzz words for college football coaches, but they don't seem to know the definitions of those words.

You mean that bad ole team down south that the big MS SEC teams seem to be afraid to put on their schedules?

My oldest threw away over $4000 in scholarships to USM. It's an awesome school.

Yep, them. I took them up on two full rides to grad school, and agree on your last statement.... :-)

OOOF. I was getting a sick feeling in the pit of me stomach about the 2005 Mercedes, as well. Until I saw who his father is. Sigh.

just in the interest of full disclosure, southern miss had, uh, "behavioral issues" with it's football team this year as well.

in fact, I think we lead them in felony arrests 3-1 now.

:(

Olive Branch is a small town, and the gossip is (my wife is a teaches at the elementary school next door) is that the mother of this young man is at the school almost every day.

It seems to run in the family. About three years ago a woman called in to ROCK 103 telling of this guy's older brother's hijinks. Seems he came out of the bathroom in a store in Mt Pleasant MS naked one morning. He was shouting that ants were all over him and trying to brush them off. Seems money might easily destroy kids growing up.
