[Detroit] Lions news is bad news

...With a record of 2-11, the silver-and-Honolulu blue are firmly entrenched at No. 32 on any power poll in this spiral arm of the galaxy. Entrenched, that is, until another loss drops them behind Ohio State, Florida and the Hamburg Sea Devils. Think it can't get worse? Hey, this is the Lions. NFL schedule makers saw fit to arrange the endgame Kitty Cats' so, so long season likewise: at the Green Bay Packers where the Lions haven't won since a guy named Brett Favre took over there (that's right, 1992); against the Chicago Bears in a game which figures to see Motor City backers immortalize the chant "Fire *&#!!%&ing Millen!"; and at the Dallas Cowboys , who on New Year's Eve will probably looking to bag the No. 2 seed in the NFC... Kevin Jones, who was knocked out of the loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday, figures to be out for the remainder of the season... Pro Bowl nominee Shaun Rogers... was slapped by the commissioner after testing positive for steroids. The judgment had Rogers forcibly sitting out four games and giving up $250,000. Naturally, "Big Baby" was innocent, protesting that the positive test represented a product that the 354-pound Rogers used to help him control his weight. Or he has asthma. Or he thought they were Shawne Merriman's Pez. Or something... Team officials announced yesterday that WR Mike Williams - you remember him: the former first-round draft pick cum The Most Useless Player in the NFL Today - flunked a weigh-in. At 240 pounds, Williams only missed the target set by Rod Marinelli and Co. by 20. Though no punitive measures have been mentioned, any punishment would seem pointless other then some quality time on the bench... Fire &#!!%&ing Millen.

Well the Chiefs are starting to look like they have found a QuarterBack...still can’t win the close ones though....but they are no longer such a pushover.

Oh man, I hope they don’t get Sam Bradford in the draft, he deserves better than this.

Though the Lions could move to Oklahoma, that way we’d have the worst NBA team and the worst NFL team.

:’) I don’t think any draft picks will help them, and anyone drafted had better hope they stay healthy enough and are good enough to eventually be traded (probably for someone worse, but who knows) to some team that isn’t a mess. They need continuity in coaching, but also need a decent coaching staff.

The Lions apparently (based on the score only, I didn’t manage to see any portion of either of their past two games) did better in their loss to the Colts than they did in their loss to the Saints. I’ll predict that Marinelli won’t be fired. For one thing, he can’t do worse next year — assuming a loss against Green Bay.

That was a heartbreaker. :’( But Eddie was often in the position of having to win the game for the team, because they hadn’t scored any other way. He’d kick six field goals in a 21-18 loss. ;’)

Thanks for the ping, Perdogg! I saw them tie it up in the 3rd, and then went back to see their ten point deficit and under 4 minutes to go as they drove for the end zone, and then the Big O (as in zero) tossed that expert interception. That was the last I saw, but I figured, cool, they pulled it off.

It’s official: Detroit Lions’ ultimate futility: first 0-16 season ever in the NFL.

Mark Sanchez Wows Lions In Pro Day
By Nate Caminata
Posted Apr 1, 2009
http://det.scout.com/2/852775.html

[snip] Mark Sanchez - who has been gaining on assumed No. 1 pick Matthew Stafford in the last two weeks - may have surpassed the unsurpassable via his Pro Day on Wednesday. And the Detroit Lions were there to witness it. We’ve caught a lot of flack for choosing Mark Sanchez No. 1 overall in the Scout.com mock draft... [end]

Keeping You Ahead of the Game
My First 2009 NFL Mock Draft
Dan Rowoth - Friday, April 3, 2009 8:24

[snip] 1. Detroit Lions: Jason Smith OT Baylor - Although quarterback is the most important position on the field, it’s irrelevant without security at the second most position - left tackle. Maybe for once the Lions will get the pick right and take the best tackle in the draft... 20. Detroit Lions (from Dallas): Rey Maualuga LB USC - The Lions addressed offensive line with the first pick and will look to improve the defense. Maualuga was a stud at USC and should give the Lions great support next to Ernie Sims. [end]

Implication, or perhaps merely inference, here, is that Denver may trade its two first round picks to Detroit for the #1 pick in order to get a QB, thus leaving Detroit with three first round picks (12, 18, 20) to fill important holes. But every place else I've seen regarding the draft prospects indicate that it's not likely to happen.

Matthew Stafford-Detroit Lions

I speculated about it myself, and have now begun to hear rumors about Stafford starting "earlier than thought".

I don't have much faith in a severely regressed Culpepper, and also don't feel the Lions have much to lose by throwing their rookie into the fire.

Verdict: That doesn't mean he should be on your team, though.

Proj: 2,470 yards, 14 Td, 16 INT

Yes, that’s right, Detroit used to have to play Green Bay twice a season. This year (and maybe next) the Lions will face the Packers four times.

Future Hall of Famer and Vikings QB Brett Favre wouldn’t be playing if he weren’t near the top of his game.

As George Allen used to say, the difference between victory and defeat (or success and failure) is “this much” and he’d hold the palms of his hands about a foot apart.

Wasted 2 1/2 hours watching most of the Detroit-Gree, er, Minnesota game.

I will say that the Lions looked much better on play execution that in recent memory. And they didn’t fall apart. They had a lot of injuries, but it’s a fairly young team.

Psychologically, it would have been MUCH better had they won their first game of the season, but New Orleans is hot, probably going to the Super Bowl this year. The Vikings didn’t look spectacular in relation to the Lions, which is A) good for the Lions and B) bad for the Vikings. They may improve as the season rolls on, as Favre gets into a groove.

As much as I don’t really like him, he’s clearly one of, if not the, greatest ever quarterback. As Woody Allen has said, 90 per cent of life is just showing up, and he’s always on the job. I wish him well — but not another SB ring. :’)

The hot game appears to have been Houston-Tennessee, they were putting up points on both sides. Dunno who won. The five idiots on Fox (that’s the one thing I miss in the off-season) rated that game, don’t remember who picked whom.

The Lions beat the Deadskins. If there's any team on their schedule they'd better beat in order to not repeat that 0-16 season, it's Washington. The longtime losers have stupid typos on their schedule page, BTW. That's typical. Pssst! It needs to be fixed. For example, it reads "vs St. Louis Rams vs Rams" which I guess means "vs St. Louis Rams at Rams" or something less redundant and more graceful. There are three or four of those (I haven't read the whole page yet). The Rams are an example of another team the Lions may beat. I'll predict right now that they'll only win one game in their division, and looking ahead, *may* win four other games.

Congratulations BTW to Michigan State for beating U of M. Beat 'em last year too, says here that's the first time back to back beating U of M since 1967. I bring up the Spartans because they parallel the Lions (other than the fact that MSU has won more games the past five or six years combined, despite a shorter season).
