Way cool. I want one.

I could smoke and crack my own grain. What fun.

I've got a recipe for a smoke Heffeweisen I want to try.

I started with an old hand crank mill. I eventually motorized it with a hand drill. The kitchenaid is designed for the purpose.

smoke Heffeweisen

Sounds good! I'm sitting here sipping on a triple-decoction dopplebock I made for the holidays!

I did a sparkling hard cider. Easiest thing I ever fermented.

5 gallons of unpastuerized cider into the carboy, airlock on, walk away.

2 weeks later add charging sugar and bottle.

1 week later chill it up, pop the top, and enjoy.

It's very dry, very fizzy, and about 4% ABV.

I'll have to look into the grain mill. I've been wanting to start cracking my own stuff.

I actually used some of my homegrown hops this year. The damned things are taking over the back yard so I figured I better use 'em.

Common recipe here in Alaska. A packet of champagne yeast helps things along and then set the carboy outside at -20 after fermentation is complete to freeze the water out.

Very potent!!!!!

I've never tried smoking malt or other grains, I've roasted it in a home coffee roaster with great success (well, the oatmeal was only a minor disaster). Any grain I put in my smoker will probably taste like salmon!

Never thought of that. The unpastuerized stuff has enough natural yeast in it to get it going, but I'll give that a try.

Ahhh...freeze distilling. Ingenious.

I've never tried smoking malt or other grain

It's hard to keep lit.

Badda bing....I'll be here all week folks.

Is this some female status symbol or something?

LOL. Don't say that in front of my big, burly brother!

He's got one of these gizmatrons. Plus attachments for bread making and meat grinding.

Hmmmmm, the meat grinding must be what makes it manly, eh? ;)

I got my wife one of those for Christmas a few years ago. She absolutely loves it. It's the rough equivalent of getting a guy a chain saw like the one pictured below.

So far as attachments, just get the bowl that comes with it and let your wife get the rest of them (and she will). My wife uses hers at least once a week and I still have no idea what it does. But it is extremely heavy and solid and will last forever. It's got some serious horsepower to do whatever it does.

Thanks.

Need to update the thread, as the girlfriend was dumped last week for expressing anti-military attitudes along with her parents. The Mixer is MINE, and I am going to learn to use it.

GF knew I was a pilot, but she didn't know what kind of pilot.

Bummer about your girlfriend but you did the right thing. A close family member of mine married into a left-wing family and now he is downright miserable. His wife's parents are right out of central casting for left-wing jerks. Her father is a goateed, Birkenstock wearing John Lennon worshipper and the mother is a scary looking Hillary Clinton type. The wife herself becomes more militant every day and I don't even like visiting anymore because she is given to anti-Bush rants and other left-wing lectures. In her house, I am polite but in my house, I let her have it one day and now I don't get invited around very much anymore which is fine with me.

The father hates my guts because one time I told him that my favorite presidents were Ronald Reagan, George Washington and George W. Bush. This look of horror on his face (when he realized I wasn't trying to be funny) was priceless.

So you made the right choice and there are plenty of good women out there who will appreciate your fine taste in kitchen appliances!

Did you order the flames for it? You gotta have flames, man. You won't be happy unless you're mixing at Mach 3 with the machine on fire...

No bummer to me, as anyone who defends hippies gets kicked to the curb. My Mixer and I will be very happy together.
