Errhh, 'deadly' and '.22' don't usually go together ;-)

Well, I suppose if we're talking squirrels...

Depends on what you want to do with your shooter. I never buy bulk cheap .22 ammo unless it's for the kids to plink with. You don't need to buy match grade ammo, but I'll never know why people strive for accuracy and then buy cheap ammo. What you need to do is to try various ammos and see which runs best in your gun. One gun might like a different ammo than another gun.

Go to http://rimfirecentral.com for a real education on rimfires.

Virtually all are deadly if you attempt to slay a bear with a .22. Unfortunately it would be deadliest to you.

There is a book, "cartridges of the world"- in the sport section of any Barnes and Noble. There you will find all you might ever need on 22LR, 22 short and 22 magnum. 22 is good for plinking, and- if subsonic- for silenced firearms used in animal control. More expensive grades are used in competitions [biathlon, free pistol].

Federal seems to clog the action less than some other brands.

Actually I heard from an Alaskan guide that the most effective handgun for grizzly defense is a .22 LR. Upon seeing the grizzly charging you draw the pistol and shoot the nearest customer in the knee then run like hell.

I've had good luck with most bulk, name brand .22 lr. Get copper jacketed if it's worth the price to you. Get the hyper sonic or the fastest that you cn get. Match ammo will be more accurate but it's up to your budget.

Self defense

.22 WMR ammunition is not specifically manufactured for self-defense, so you will not find self defense loads in any of the manufacturers' brands listed below. This is because while there are some "deep concealment" handguns (notably the mini-revolvers from North American Arms) that are chambered for the .22 WMR cartridge, no rimfire cartridge is ordinarily recommended for self-defense. The gun makers are giving the customers what they want, while the ammo makers are constrained by the physical reality that no .22 WMR cartridge is a "man stopper."

While no .22 WMR load is really adequate for self-defense, any gun is better than no gun at all. So, if a .22 WMR rifle or pistol is all that is available, it makes sense to at least use the best ammunition available for the purpose. According to the statistics that I have seen, that is the 40 grain jacketed hollow point bullet. The top example is the Winchester Super-X load,

I mostly use Federal ammo 22LR buy it by the (brick 550 rds)
I remember when I was a kid we used to get it by the (sleve 700rds per box)
any way I love going out side in my back yard either with my rifle or pistol, with my kids and just shoot. We set up targets and have a day.

WHen I was a kid I remember going to my aunts farm in upstate NY and shoot woodchucks with 22's. Really never used it for much more than that. just a lot of (CHEAP) fun.

When I was about 18 or so myself and some friends wanted to go bear hunting in Montanna so I bought a Marlin 45/70 lever action. I just didn't think the 22 would do.

Another vote for CCI mini-mags. Twenty years ago, 2 friends, in Detroit, had break-ins.

Marline model 60 and CCI mini-mags sent two Clymers to the hospital.

One shattered femur and one guy who "lost one of his B**LS".

My 83 year old Dad has Marline model 60, and he sleeps well at night in Detroit. That and one of his sons', rock the new year in, Detroit style!!!

Most deadly for humans or squirrels? I agree with those who say CCI is the best .22 ammo.
