Fruitcakes catapulted into the air

ST. PAUL, Minn., Dec. 1 (UPI) -- Some people are fond of throwing caution to the wind but in a number of U.S. towns, residents send old fruitcakes into the air.

Long a favorite subject of ridicule, holiday fruitcakes of all shapes and sizes turn into cannon fodder each winter in Colorado, Minnesota and Wisconsin, The St. Paul (Minn.) Pioneer Press reports.

A Pepin, Wis. blacksmith built a special catapult four years ago to rocket good, bad and dried-out fruitcakes at a toy elf named "Dippy."

Tom Latane says he has learned that cakes weighing two pounds launch the best.

In Manitou, Colo., a Great Fruitcake Toss is held each year with some cakes soaring more than 1,000 feet.

"We moved to the high school track field last year because the fruitcakes were being thrown out of the park, "Manitou organizer Leslie Lewis says.

For the past five years the town of Fairmont, Minn., has held a fruitcake event called The Fabulous Fairmont Fruitcake Follies.

"Most people don't think it's legitimate food, and the ones who love it, they're not sure either," says Dave Smith, founder of the Fairmont toss.

Yeah...at first I too thought that this article was in reference to catapulting a bunch of our liberal politicians out here in California and aiming them into some shark infested waters in the Pacific Ocean.

Wishful thinking...sigh.

Anyways...I am posting this because I do find Christmas fruitcake to be a truly disgusting food.

I am quite sure that some twerp offered fruitcake as a gift at the Nativity The fruitcake made baby Jesus cry.

Strange. I like fruitcake. In fact, I made four of them last night like I always do each Christmas, using my mom's old recipie. And I eat them too!

Well, at least it's a fun and festive way to get rid of the damned things. Of course, supply will run out soon because they're really aren't that many of them - just the same ones getting sent from one person who doesn't want them to another and another.....

When I was a poor starving artist in NYC (Brooklyn actually) I kept one of my mom's whiskey soaked fruitcakes in the fridge and would only eat any of it when I was only absolutely desperate. It lasted forever.

I survived on cheap rice and beans, boiled potatoes and cheap wine/booze. Boy was it fun. Who needs food when you've got all those "lonely" art school girls?

The problem is that most fruitcakes are definitely in the inedible department.

You need to eat a real Colin Street Bakery fruitcake and see such a cake can be quite good.
