Have you thought about granite tile countertops? Corin, there is a store in Glen Allen called The Tile Shop that has a nice array of granite tiles, and they're not that expensive. It is about 1/4th what the granite slabs cost, and they even sell the counter edgings to make it look real nice.

We'd thought about using them, but then decided to go with quartz because we thought it would be better for re-sale, in this area, and in our price range, to use the solid surface.

We discussed tile. I'm holding final judgement until we do the bartop in the basement but I've never liked tile for a kitchen counter. I dislike the grout... always seems kind of yucky to me for some reason. I want a nice smooth surface I can knead bread on.
