The Hobbit Hole XXXII - Sweet is the sound of falling rain
The Freeper Hobbit Hole Blog ^ | December 1, 2006

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

Hey, you know Matthew got 3rd prize in the pinewood derby at TCDTS? He was pretty disappointed, because he felt like his design was good and he should've done better. (A bus beat him, for cryin' out loud!)

So Steve sat down with him at the table a couple of times last week and they just putzed with it.

Now the Tulsa metro regional derby was this past weekend and Matthew got 1st place!!! (Joshua didn't place at all but he was so happy for Matthew he didn't care.)

We're goin' to Norman!

Yay 2J! And what a valuable lesson about perseverance and good design that Matthew must have learned.

Awesome!

Here are the pictures...

Steve helps them achieve their design but the design is all theirs. One year, Matthew wanted to do a catapult, drew it up and Steve helped him cut it out, knowing all along that it wouldn't do very well and it didn't. That's ok!

This year, Matthew did a razor-thin car, painted it black and then laid clear "iridescent" wrapping paper over it so that it shimmered in the light. (He kept telling me he wanted it to look like a CD).

Joshua drew out the design on the side of the pinewood and Steve cut it out. Then Joshua painted it sparkly gold on top, sparkly silver on the sides.

Steve did "Lightening McQueen" and I raced it in the "Parent/leader race." Here I am. Ka-Chow! Heh heh...I got second place.

Here's Matthew getting his 1st place trophy. (The guy behind him is who beat Lightening.)

Here's Joshua, waiting in line to race.

I think this is probably the last pinewood Matthew will do. So going to the state level this year with him is going to be fun.

They also have an open race so Joshua can try again.

The fence made a hugh difference in how I perceived the place. So did Cisco. ;-) Among other things.

Ungh...I'm supposed to drop the car off to be worked on in a tiny bit here. Was kind of thinking of trying to walk home, so of course it's raining.

On the bright side, I think I can hear chickadees whistling their spring call. They're probably just being optimistic, but... Unless chickadees out here don't actually drop the whistle for winter.

Still no birds coming to my feeder. I think it's Cisco's fault.

Congratulations for Matthew!! Hope he does well!

Joseph won 3rd place in his Pack's Derby one year, and was able to go to the Tri-Pack Derby for all three Cub Scout Packs in town. His car did well on his first run, but one of the kids catching the cars at the bottom of the track pushed down on the car to stop it. That caused the undercarriage to get smooshed, and it didn't run right again. We were disappointed for him, but frankly, he wasn't that upset about it. He had his trophy from the Pack Derby, and he'd made it to the larger one, so he was satisfied.

Wow! Those are great Derby cars; I like the tank! Joseph always enjoyed the decorating of the cars more than the actual building of them!

You have smarter birds than we do, the pups have eaten two little birds and they still come down...

I have a bad feeling about the prospects of baby bunnies this spring.

I'm working, too.

Sadly, so is my wacky customer.

<sigh> I'll have to tell him we can't do what he wants. I wish I could deal with his daughter exclusively; she's more rational ...

What does your goofball customer want, anyway? Artificial intelligence in a toaster?
