Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!
O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.
O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.
O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!
Lazy...or just stoned?
Heheh...
Yes. :-)
...My day was about par for the course...network outage this morning that I pretty much managed to fix, but only after a log of hairpulling because NOTHING is documented and figuring out which switch is connected to which other switch almost requires a mind meld with the equipment.
And then there were the typical moments...someone called with an error that I said should be fixed by a reboot. I told her to try that first and give me a call back if it didn't work. My boss waited fifteen minutes and then said he'd really feel better if I'd give the person a call back. Could I do that for him, please? It's like that all day. Means he has to take time out of his already busy day to supervise me, ya know.
And then the other gal was talking to me about another site where she said the IT guy was whining on account of he wishes the tray icon could be hidden for the monitoring software he puts on all systems so he can watch Internet use and all - he'd prefer users didn't know when he was spying. I think that kind of stuff is pretty stoopid, but I could see that myboss was thinking more along the lines of "I wish I could afford that kinda software..." He has a conniption fit if he so much as sees that someone has put a photograph as the background on their PC.
He's really a nice guy, but...it's almost comical how predictable this is getting, ya know?

For the life of me, I don't know why so many IT managers want to monitor for content. I think it is merely for the power trip.
We monitor for bandwidth. Somebody starts downloading movies... sucking up all the bandwidth... then I care. But we only really care about the congestion. People that are misusing company time or assets... they're already going to be on the fast track out of the company anyway.
Beta testing word is it's quite good...
Whhops - that's not the blog link - and now I lost it.
sorry, i'll quit now
Exactly. Good managers care about results, not the sanity breaks.
I figure if the metrosexual down the row doesn't get yelled at for reading DailyKos at a 90% conservative place, I'm ok reading FR now and then.
Voyeurism-- that's the word I was looking for. And you know, I've done that sort of monitoring before, back when I thought it was just what we were supposed to do. But I have to admit to learning things about co-workers that I really wish I didn't know. There are things you just can't un-see.
In our policy docs we do make clear that we (IT) reserve the right to do pretty much whatever we want. We have done some investigations and monitored traffic of certain people, but in reality they were already well on the way to getting fired, and all we did was back up that decision.
Our policy even says that we ~assume~ that some personal use of computers will occur, and that as long as it is reasonable and doesn't burden our systems, it's up to each supervisor to set and enforce standards for their people.
Heh. "No, dude... it's just ~never~ the blue wire... "
'Cause I will if they didn't ...
Yah. Pretty much everybody does a little personal email, and browsing of various things. Lord knows all the top brass have streamers running of all the stocks in their portfolios.
I probably spend the bulk of my day reading news sites, both regular news and technology news. The difference between work and play in that environment is kinda fuzzy. Heck, I probably get about half of the breaking tech stuff off of FR. Otherwise its Computerworld and The Register and whatnot. I used to browse slashdot alot, but it's tiring anymore. Too many lefties.
It's Ahnold. :-)
Heh heh heh!!
This is rather entertaining!
*sigh*
In the "I would have done things differently" department for this evening...
Went to clean the bathroom, and while I mopped the floor, I put the cat box on the counter. It wasn't really in a precarious position, but of course, it wasn't where it usually is. Tam came in, disapproved, and managed to shift the whole thing onto the floor.
Yes, the floor was wet.
Yes, it was the scoopable kind of litter - the kind that turns to glue when wet.
No, I hadn't changed it a few minutes before, if you catch muh drift.
I didn't kill Tam, but there was very nearly a "he died then" kind of moment. He had the good sense to scram.
It's cleaned up, but I don't feel like tackling any more housekeeping tasks tonight. Ungh.
