The Hobbit Hole XXXII - Sweet is the sound of falling rain
The Freeper Hobbit Hole Blog ^ | December 1, 2006

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Sing hey! for the bath at close of day
That washes the weary mud away!
A loon is he that will not sing:
O! Water Hot is anoble thing!

O! Sweet is the sound of falling rain.
and the brook that leaps from hill to plain;
but better than rain or rippling streams
is Water Hot that smokes and steams.

O! Water cold we may pour at need
down a thirsty throat and be glad indeed;
but better is Beer, if drink we lack,
and Water Hot poured down the back.

O! Water is fair that leaps on high
in a fountain white beneath the sky;
but never did fountain sound so sweet
as splashing Hot Water with my feet!

Typically, yes, I think that's how these stories go :~)

Very interesting, Ramius. I should come out there some day and try to get you to give me some lessons.

I'd like to find a way sometime to brush up and get some practice. Just for old times sake. Course... fer that I need a sextant, some pubs, a boat... and a horizon. Doesn't work so good inside puget sound. :-)

Maybe a cruise is the way to go...

New phone, shiny. I get one in August I think... maybe I'll get something cooler. But mine works fine.

I'm tempted to get a Chocolate in some obnoxious color. ;-)

But the trouble is, I really don't know what kind of reception I'd get at home with an all digital phone. I had bad luck with that one phone, but I dunno if it was just an exceptionally bad model or what.

Still, a free phone is a free phone, and I suppose I should go fer it, unless I'm really willing to change providers. Verizon is probably the least flexible of any of the services, but their customer service rocks, in my experience.

They have a pretty decent network too. Better than the alternatives anyway.

My bothers are going to visit at the beginning of April. Now we have a deadline on the room. :-D

my QM chief really believed in. Even though we relied on electronics, we shot morning and evening stars and local apparent noon-- every day.

Was his name Jack Aubrey, by chance?

LOL... Maybe not Jack Aubrey, but he was a salty dog.

Yep, he got a good lecture on why he should never be on that dirt bike without a helmet.

My friend David was wearing a helmet on his bike accident and still suffered major head trauma.

Most places, anyhow. At the compound...I think Ramius got a better signal with Cingular than I get.

Dunno how typical that is nationwide, though.

What room will the bothers stay in?

Not ours, and that's all that matters :-D

There's the spare bed in the guest room and we have a twin mattress we can put on the floor. Or we can shove 'em both in the basement if they/we prefer.

Yeah, by then it i will not be nearly so chilly down there. Just as long as they keep the volume down as they play xbox all night long on the big-screen... Heh, they will be begging to come visit us more often. Need to get a fridge down there with a huge supply of soda.

If you ask they may let you try it and see if it works. Different phones do make a big difference in reception even if they are both digital, in my experience from my old apartment. If the phone simply is not good enough to use at home you just march in and say it simply will not do and they will probably fix you up. I have seen people do just that when I was in the Verizon store for something.

Also, you might google up some online reviews. There is bound to be plenty of info on how good those thing's reception is.

And go through The Collection and find a few stacks of stuff for them to watch. Maybe just give 'em Ranma and Banner of the Stars and they'll be set while we're at work.

I'm being bad and doing a little research during lunch time. Unfortunately most of the reviews I've found so far seem to be done by gadget geeks in highly populated areas...doesn't help me much regarding reception info. I admit, I like the geek factor of a lot of the new phones, but overall, I can live without the nifty features if I get a phone that works. It's just that the idea of a bright red phone that plays MP3s is appealing. ;-)

I did return one phone due to reception problems, and they let me do it - this in spite of the fact that I was past my approval period! But I felt bad for havin' to do that. Guess you do what you gotta do, but it still seems like taking advantage of 'em, a bit, even if it's during the 30 days.

And again, I'm partly just trying to decide if I'm ready to commit to Verizon for another two years. I've been vey happy with 'em, for the most part, but it is a commitment.

You might get more info from forum posts on the phone and not full out reviews. Find some cellphone forums.

I hope you reminded him of that.
