New Delhi, November 25: More than 200 monuments, most belonging to the Mughal period, have vanished in the Capital, a survey conducted by the Department of Archaeology has found. Among them are a garden in front of Krishi Bhavan and a domed building in front of Jantar Mantar, where the NDMC building stands now... A senior Archaeology Department official says that many gates, wells, mosques and shivalays mentioned on the list as being located in the Walled City and elsewhere cannot be traced... Among the missing monuments are Rang Mahal, built by descendants of Bairam Khan, and Chandni Mahal, which was in the possession of Akbar's son Salim. The Haveli of Munshi Bhawani Shankar, popularly known as "Namak Haram Ki Haveli" cannot be found in Chandni Chowk either. It got its name because the Marathas termed Bhawani Shankar thus for his dealings with the British. The Tank of Shazi, which existed till at least 1922, cannot be found in the Ramlila ground. Also missing is a domed chhatri on Prithviraj Road and a mosque or two in Nizamuddin.
