COLLEGE PARK, Md. (AP) -- Wake Forest completed the finest road performance in Atlantic Coast Conference history against a team it had trouble beating anywhere.

Now, after defeating Maryland 38-24 Saturday night, the No. 20 Demon Deacons will take their successful road show to Florida to play for the league championship.

"Wake Forest (10-2, 6-2) will be seeking its first ACC title since 1970 next Saturday against Georgia Tech in Jacksonville. The teams did not face each other this season.

The final game of a crazy ACC regular season matched two of the league's most surprising teams in a duel for the Atlantic Division title. Wake Forest handed Maryland (8-4, 5-3) its first home loss behind an offense that was virtually unstoppable."

This is a great win for one of the "little guys" in NCAA sports. The third smallest College/University in NCAA Div 1 Football. Has had an amazing season this year led by an amazingly wonderful coach.

It's NOT Florida State; It's NOT Virginia Tech; It's NOT The University of Miami; It's NOT the University of Maryland; It's NOT Boston College.

It IS the Wake Forest Demon Deacons going to the ACC Champtionship Game with Georgia Tech (who lost today) and to a Bowl, no doubt, after that game - no matter what its result may be (but am pulling for another amazing victory!)

Way to go, DEACS!

The smallest two are Rice and Tulsa.

Rice is one of the other two. BTW, it looks as if Maryland will play Navy in a bowl game.

It's been an off year for the usual ACC big "powers" in football (otherwise known as the season leading up to the real ACC sport of Basketball....).

Thanks for that information.

The last time Wake did as well was in 1970 when they won the ACC Championship. Of course that was BEFORE the addition of Florida State, Virginia Tech, Boston College, and Miami U to the ACC. When those schools were added, I thought I would never see the day when little Wake Forest would have a chance to be successful in football again.

That's why this is very sweet.

I don't think I've ever seen a Wake Forest game.

I know it from "Brian's Song".

Good luck to them.

Well, frankly, they haven't had much to look at for years and years re: football (baseketball and Tim Duncan is another matter). Yes, Brian's Song was a good movie back a long time ago about Brian Piccolo who was a great Wake Forest Football player and was roommate of Gale Sayers at Chicago Bears in the pros. It was a definite tearjerker....because it was true. Brian Piccolo died of cancer. The other great Wake Forest Alum is of course Arnold Palmer.......who recently talked about how much Wake Forest meant to him.

Anyway - it's just nice for one of the "little guys" (Wake) to win in football - because it is so very rare.

thanks for the good wishes to them.

I'm old enough to remember Piccolo playing before he was hit with that. I'll admit to tears during the movie. He wasn't MY hero specifically, but he was a hero.

Kind of a ramble there.

Good luck to Wake Forest. In Brian's memory.

I'm old enough too....:-) - but I have to admit I was not following football at that time so the first I learned about Brian Piccolo was in the movie.

Yes, join your good wishes to Wake.
