College Football - Live Thread - Weekend Thirteen
Sportsline.com Scoreboard ^ | Thursday November 23rd to Saturday November 25th

Posted on 11/22/2006 7:09:01 PM PST by MikefromOhio

Weekend Twelve showcased what is, in my opinion, the best rivalry in college football and one of the best rivalries in all sports. Ohio State vs. Michigan seemed to actually live up to the hype, with an Ohio State victory over Michigan 42-39. The game was dampened a bit by the passing of a legend, Bo Schembechler, the day before the game. Needless to say, Bo (and Woody for that matter) would not have liked the game given the nearly 900 yards of offense and over 80 points scored. This weekend gives us several match-ups that are key to the BCS equation. Notre Dame travels to LA to take on USC while LSU can seriously hinder Arkansas’ (and by extension Florida’s) chances to get to the game.

(9) LSU at (5) Arkansas (PICK)

This game has several implications for the BCS. If LSU wins, it has an outside shot at a BCS At-Large bid if the cards fall right. IF Arkansas wins impressively, it still has an outside shot at the BCS national title game with a win against Florida in the SEC championship game. Arkansas is on a roll. LSU’s quarterback tends to try to force things when playing in a big game like this. Will he make another big mistake? I think so.

Arkansas 24 – LSU 17

Here is yet another game pitting 2 teams with BCS hopes. USC and Notre Dame can both make a statement and put their teams into a good spot for the BCS title game. USC needs to win this game impressively enough to switch 3 or 4 coaches poll voters to vote them over Michigan as #2 OR defeat Notre Dame impressively enough to drop them in the polls to hurt Michigan’s computer ranking. Notre Dame, conversely, needs to win this game and hope that people have forgotten how badly they were beaten by Michigan in week 3 of this season. USC is by far the better team. That didn’t stop Notre Dame from making it a GREAT game last year. I think USC is better on defense this year and still has enough offense to get past Notre Dame.

(18) Boston College (-4) at Miami (FL)

This will be the 22nd anniversary of the miracle throw by Doug Flutie. Now that might sometimes motivate some teams, Miami is pretty lethargic about everything it seems. They need to win to be bowl eligible.

BC 31 – Miami 15

Friday November 24th, 2006 (ABC at Noon)

Texas A&M at Texas (-13)

Texas isn’t anywhere near the team it was at this point last season, but if Colt McCoy is healthy, they should win this game. If A&M has a good day throwing the ball, they could make this game interesting for at least 3 quarters.

Texas 38 – Texas A&M 20

Friday November 24th, 2006 (ABC at 3:30PM)

Colorado at (23) Nebraska (-14)

Saturday November 25th 2006 (in ranking order)

(4) Florida (-9.5) at Florida State

South Florida at (7) West Virginia (-20.5)

WVU 36 – South Florida 14

(8) Louisville (-11.5) at Pittsburgh

Louisville 27 – Pitt 19

(10) Wisconsin BYE

(12) Boise St. (-3) at Nevada

Boise St. 21 – Nevada 20 ****UPSET ALERT****

(13) Oklahoma (-6) at Oklahoma St.

(14) Auburn BYE

Syracuse at (15) Rutgers (NL)

Rutgers 20 – Syracuse 3

(16) Georgia Tech at Georgia (-2)

(21) BYU (-10.5) at Utah

BYU 32 – Utah 17

(22) California BYE

South Carolina at (24) Clemson (-5.5)

South Carolina 23 – Clemson 20 ****UPSET ALERT****

Purdue at (25) Hawaii (-17)

Purdue 48 – Hawaii 45 ****UPSET ALERT****

BY REQUEST

San Diego St at New Mexico (-10)

For both teams, this game will go far in determining the pecking order for the bowl games. TCU is the better team on paper. My picks for New Mexico are normally absolutely the opposite of who is the better team.

New Mexico 27 – San Diego St. 20

(4) Florida (-9.5) at Florida State

You have to score points to win. FSU could ruin Florida’s chances at the BCS National Title game here. Unfortunately a long year will only get longer. FSU won’t really ever be in this one I don’t think.

Florida 27 – FSU 7

Mack is back!

Congratulations, Mack Brown, you've returned to your old ways of finding a way to choke at some point every season. Just a fluke that Vince Young was able to overcome Mack last year, but this year we see the familiar theme of not only choking when a slot in the mythical nat'l title game was being handed to them, but then following up and making sure to choke their way out of the conference championship. Unfreakin' believable, yet completely predictable.

Yeah, Colt was off his game (but that had to be obvious in practice, and they've got a quality backup QB), but once again the Longhorns looked mentally unprepared for a big game. That going for it on 4th down early in the 1st quarter instead of getting a field goal really looms large now. Unless OU chokes tomorrow and the Longhorns back in and then beat Nebraska, UT is shut out of a BCS bowl and this will hurt recruiting when the Longhorns should be sewing it up.

BTW, that was a real class act for that Texas PhAggie to take the blind cheap shot with his helmet to Colt's shoulder well after the play when Colt was just standing around (resulting in the PhAg's ejection.) Now another launched helmet to the injured shoulder (this time probably a legal hit, at least in college) has knocked Colt out of the game. Neck and head immobilized as they load him on the cart.

Colt McCoy being carried off the field injured.
Hate to see that.

A&M is the most classless college in the NCAA. F*cking cheap shots all day long. Looks like they got their wish and put McCoy in the hospital on a head shot and a late hit that got one A&M player ejected. Knowing the f*cking Aggies, they'll all be buying him beer and patting him on the back tonight, and the coach will tell him what a great job he did.

There's no way that hit on McCoy was an intentional cheap shot. Colt was backpeddaling and throwing as he was falling backwards. The Aggie was launched at his chest, and Colt's head came down to what had been chest level.

You can be pissed that Aggies won, but don't make more out of what happened on that play than what really did.

We'll see all y'all next year in College Station. Until then, suck it up and quit your bitchin'. Act like real Texans for crying out loud.

Gig 'em!

PS. I pray Colt is okay and I want him to lead the tu over Nebraska. I hated to see him get hurt.

Real Texans don't nail players in the back after the play is over, but it's an A&M tradition.

He was aiming for Colt's injured shoulder (with 20 seconds left in the game.) May have been legal, but what really pisses off Longhorn fans was the cheap shot on the interception a couple of minutes earlier when Colt was just standing around after the play and starting to take off his helmet when he was blindsided by a FAggie into the injured shoulder. The FAggies are claiming that he was just blocking for the interception return, but that is just bullshit as the ref immediately ejected the FAg.

To be clear, the hits on Colt did NOT cost UT the game (nor did the referees, if you can't overcome 1 bad call on a TD and only score 7 points against Gay&M, you deserve to lose) but the cheap shot after the game had pretty much been won is infuriating. They've won the game, but they are still trying to knock out our star QB? Completely classless garbage, and why the hit that knocked Colt out of the game just further enrages Longhorn fans, because it suggest that the cheap shot (ejection play) might not have been so much a fluke as a strategy. Franchione, based on his history at TCU and Alabama, certainly isn't known for ethical behavior.

That last shot wasnt an intentional cheapshot, come on. McCoy came down on his arm thats why he was carted off. Now that shot by 91 was totally BS and he should be suspended into next year for it.

I don't know what happened on the interception. From what I did see, I'd guess the Aggie did try to get a late hit on the QB under the guise of blocking for the return. Colt certainly was not engaged in the act of trying to make a tackle when he got belted. The ejection was deserved.

As far as I can tell, the hit that knocked McCoy out of the game was just hard football. Had not that big rush been coming, he might have completed that pass. Instead he tried to launch the ball while avoiding the hit. It resulted in a bad ball and a worse hit than it would have been. Regrettable, but one of those things.

If either, or both, of these hits had occurred much earlier in the game, you might fairly wonder if it was a deliberate strategy by A&M. But the last one certainly came during trash time when Texas was already beaten for all practical purposes.

I hope Colt is okay. The hit didn't look that horrible to me, but it obviously hurt, and he might even have a broken jaw. I hope not.

I'd like to think that it wasn't, but he did leave his feet and launch himself helmet first at the right (previously injured) shoulder. Legal in college, sometimes called in the pro's. Like I said, normally that is just written off as part of the game, but coming right after the ejection cheap shot makes one wonder. Clearly he was aiming for that injured shoulder, which in college is legal. But combine it with the ejection and it leaves a bitter taste.

Remember this is Gay&M, they never compete for the mythical nat'l championship and so have to aim for and be satisfied with far less. The school whose fight song, unlike those of most schools that celebrate and cheer their teams, is all about trashing UT.

He didnt aim for the shoulder, I have it on DVR and he was aiming for the center of McCoys chest and McCoys helmet came down on the defenders helmet, it was poor timing. MCCoy caught himself on the ground wrenching his shoulder and banging his head on the ground.

I haven't heard any updates, but would guess that UT was just being extra cautious when they immobilized Colt before taking him off the field. The replays to me looked like only his shoulder was hit, not the head, but maybe so.

Now go whip those overrated Irish tomorrow night! Though I'm not yet ready to rule out a UCLA shocker or at least a tight game next week if the Bruins show up the way they did for 58 minutes in South Bend earlier.

Since we trashed tu today, I'm still singing it. I did enjoy watching the Texas Aggies beat up on the former Texas football high school all stars. I was surprised how easily they were out-physicalled on their own home field. Perhaps you should worry about that more than who-hit-whom-when. Wasn't it fun watching J-train put sips on their asses? I really enjoyed that.

But when it comes to losing, nothing beats tu. Honestly, tu whines more about their losses than anyone else in college football.

Cowboy up! You lost, get over it.

Oh, by the way, if you're from tu, you really shouldn't be calling anyone else fags, if you know what I mean. Give me a break. But I must ask, did you even go there, or are you just one of those mouthy t-shirt fans?

As I said before, I hope Colt recovers and leads the team to a Big 12 championship.

It was a hard hit in a hard hitting game.

After seeing it a couple times now, I have my doubts that it was intentional.
