America's First Space Station

Skylab is "cool" for a variety of reasons.  First, it is a manned space exploration subject.  Second, it was a spin-off of the Apollo Programme.  Third, it is an example of how to make the most of what you have on hand.  Also, Skylab is a story of determination and missed opportunities.  In addition, there was a bit of hoopla surrounding Skylab.  There were commemorative medallions, bottles, stamps, and other items.  NASA intended for the Shuttle to operate with Skylab, but the Shuttle programme was about two years behind schedule.  Congressional cuts deprived NASA of the funds to boost Skylab into a higher orbit and replace failing gyroscopes - the station was allowed to re-enter the Earth's atmosphere on 11 July 1979. 

Skylab Launch: 14 May 1973.  Severe damage was sustained during launch, including the loss of the station's micrometeoroid shield/sun shade and one of its main solar panels. Debris from the lost micrometeoroid shield further complicated matters by pinning the remaining solar panel to the side of the station, preventing its deployment and thus leaving the station with a huge power deficit.

Skylab I: 25 May 1973.  Pete Conrad, Paul Weitz, and Joseph Kerwin.  The station underwent extensive repair during a spacewalk by the first crew.  Lasted 28.03 days.

Skylab II: 28 July 1973.  Alan Bean, Jack Lousma, and Owen Garriott.  Lasted 59.46 days.

Skylab III: 16 November 1973.  Gerald Carr, William Pogue, and Edward Gibson.  Lasted 84.05 days.

I live in Birmingham. I moved here for a promotion. I love it the people are much friendlier than up north. I am still trying to find my way around the state but use my weekends to go exploring.

I see you are from Lousianna. I took a weekend to drive down there to see the wildlife. I was amazed at the beauty of the state, even though the ravages of Katrina are still evident.

I've heard generally good things about Birmingham. You should have some very beautiful areas near you. Depending on your age, you might be able to meet singles through some activities at UAB.

For the most part, I like Louisiana. I've lived here since 2002, and Louisiana is a very beautiful state. I miss the mountains, but some of the sites here are unique and wonderful.

are you going to live one of the two places or somewhere entirely different?

that long drive does give one pause for thinking/decisions.Getting acquainted on line helps to get to know the person in a lot of ways before things get clouded up with "emotions"..not really bad.

because I paid for the site (republican) with check I have limited access to bells & whistles for one week til check clears. I was able to see enough w/o joining to decide to join that one. Maybe I just wasn't doing the type of investigation that you & bill were first.

It is funny how many people are shy to participate in a singles thread. They say they feel embarrassed.. not sure why but I tend to jump in quickly & not really analyze all the ramifications & don't truly care too much about those detractors who might not approve etc.

There are a lot of nice people here to get to know at a more personal level than you can achieve on a "fight & spit" thread where it seems often the worse of people can come out

So good to see you.

Love the rainbow, and its reminder to us all.

You know I didn't tune into the elections until Wednesday morning. I truly was afraid of what I would find.

I was depressed for awhile, but then reminded myself that my happiness doesn't come from man; it comes from God, and my family. That contines to be my lightning rod.

I will continue to vote my faith. It shall sustain me, as will God. There are reasons for everything, even when we don't see it. Trust in the Lord, and we will never be disappointed.

A Fortified House

The floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall. —Matthew 7:25 According to an article in The Wall Street Journal, some people in the US are building houses stronger than ever before.

Hurricanes, floods, and tornadoes have caused billions of dollars in property damage in states across the nation. So, at the urging of businesses, government, and hard-pressed insurance companies, some builders are constructing fortress-like homes with windows that can withstand 130 mile-per-hour winds, roof nails so strong they can only be cut off, and framing material that can weather the tremendous forces faced by a supersonic jet. In Bolingbrook, Illinois, a community damaged by a tornado in the 1990s, a company is constructing such a “fortified” house in hopes that the idea will catch on.

We who know the Lord Jesus realize that when it comes to building our spiritual foundation, it must be strong and secure. In today’s Scripture, Christ made it clear what that foundation must be when He referred to “these sayings of Mine” (Matt. 7:24), which included His teaching in the Sermon on the Mount (Matt. 5–7).

I have to say.... I have NOT watched much news since Tuesday...and NO fox news or other national news at ALL!!

After the way that Fox was cheer leading for the Demons tuesday night.... I may be done with them forever.

I have listened to a bit of Hannity and Rush, but that is about it since Tues. I am still in my "no politics" mode for now....and probably will be until at least the end of the year....aside from this site anyway.

Oh gosh Dolly...I have never filled out anything like this "get to know you" before. After I filled it all out and attached my picture, I checked to see how many other ladies, in my age group, had joined. I just cracked up! There is only one other lady in that category and she lives in PA.

I noticed a couple of things when filling out the questions...it only gives you the choice of a cat or a dog...I have one of each. It also only gives you a choice of one career...I am a retired Nurse/Social Worker. How do I choose which one to put down?

A brief weather report from the normally beautiful North Oregon Coast...pouring rain, but the dreaded wind hasn't arrived as yet. We had 2.54" from 0500 yesterday to 0500 this morning. Right now, my weather station is reporting .73" since the rain began about 2 hours ago.
