Unless the LORD builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain.
Psalm 127:1>
At this time, when feelings run high, the world seems crazy, and anger seems to be the one thing the peoples of the world have in common, I invite you, my fellow FReepers, to join me in prayers and meditation for guidance, God's help and for our fellow man, for America, our troops, and all our own needs.
Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer!
That calls me from a world of care,
And bids me at my Fathers throne
Make all my wants and wishes known.
In seasons of distress and grief,
My soul has often found relief
And oft escaped the tempters snare
By thy return, sweet hour of prayer!
William Bradbury
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear though the earth should change,
though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea;
though its waters roar and foam,
though the mountains tremble with its tumult.
Psalm 46: 1-3
Regarding your water heater situation---I can't tell you how many times we have had car problems (flat tires, dead batteries) that were discovered in our own driveway! Praise God for keeping us from being stranded on the highway!
Joining you in praise and in hallelujahs to our Good Savior.
Your post is all and tremendously powerful and beautiful, and these closing lines the central pearl of a whole strand. Thank you.
Thank you so much, dear Knitting.
This hymn has a sad story associated with it. In January 1956, five missionaries sang it before entering the Ecuadorian jungle to bring the Gospel to the Auca Indians. Their names were Nate Saint, Ed McCully, Jim Elliott, Roger Yoderian, and Peter Fleming. After the men reached the Aucas, the Indians murdered them on the Curaray River. However, the story has a happy ending. Years later, contact with the Aucas was re-established, and many came to Christ, including the killers, which is how first hand details of the missionaries deaths came to light.
One of the best known of the five martyrs was Jim Elliot. A number of his sayings are still quoted (e.g., He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep, to gain what he cannot lose). Elliots wife Elisabeth went on to considerable fame as an author and radio broadcaster. Her book Through the Gates of Splendor describes the encounter with the Aucas; its title comes from a line in this hymn.

We rest on Thee, our Shield and our Defender!
We go not forth alone against the foe;
Strong in Thy strength, safe in Thy keeping tender,
We rest on Thee, and in Thy Name we go.
Strong in Thy strength, safe in Thy keeping tender,
We rest on Thee, and in Thy Name we go.
Yes, in Thy Name, O Captain of salvation!
In Thy dear Name, all other names above;
Jesus our Righteousness, our sure Foundation,
Our Prince of glory and our King of love.
Jesus our Righteousness, our sure Foundation,
Our Prince of glory and our King of love.
We go in faith, our own great weakness feeling,
And needing more each day Thy grace to know:
Yet from our hearts a song of triumph pealing,
We rest on Thee, and in Thy Name we go.
Yet from our hearts a song of triumph pealing,
We rest on Thee, and in Thy Name we go.
We rest on Thee, our Shield and our Defender!
Thine is the battle, Thine shall be the praise;
When passing through the gates of pearly splendor,
Victors, we rest with Thee, through endless days.
When passing through the gates of pearly splendor,
Victors, we rest with Thee, through endless days.
Rom 8:35 Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or danger, or sword?
Rom 8:36 As it is written, "For your sake we are being killed all the day long; we are regarded as sheep to be slaughtered."
Rom 8:37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us.
Rom 8:38 For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers,
Rom 8:39 nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
OH LORD of Redemption, keep my eyes refreshed with the Glorious Vision of your Love for us in Christ Jesus.
Bear us up on eagles wings away from the clamor of injustice and wickedness that assaults my ears.
Exo 19:4 You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles' wings and brought you to myself.
We love you Lord.

I read about them when I was a teenager...I was impressed...
"God, you've done it all!
Who is quite like you?
You, who made me stare trouble in the face,
Turn me around;
Now let me look life in the face.
I've been to the bottom;
Bring me up, streaming with honors;
Turn to me, be tender to me,
And I'll take up the lute and thank you
To the tune of your faithfulness, God.
I'll make music for you on a harp,
Holy One of Israel.
When I open up in song to you,
I let out lungsful of praise,
My rescued life a song.
All day long I'm chanting
About you and your righteous ways,
While those who tried to do me in
Slink off looking ashamed."
God Looms Majestic in Zion,
He Towers in Splendor
Over All the Big Names.
Great and Awesome is Your Beauty;
Let Everyone Praise You!
Holy. Yes, Holy. (Ps.99:2,3)

Now that the daystar glimmers bright
We suppliantly pray
That He, the uncreated Light,
May guide us on our way.
No sinful word, nor deed of wrong,
Nor thoughts that idly rove,
But simple truth be on our tongue,
And in our hearts be love.
And while the hours in order flow,
O Christ, securely fence
Our gates, beleaguered by the foe,
The gate of every sense.
And grant that to Thine honor, Lord,
Our daily toil may tend;
That we begin it at Thy Word,
And in Thy favor end.
To God the Father glory be,
And to His only Son,
And to the Spirit, One and Three,
While endless ages run.

2Th 2:16 Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God our Father, who loved us and gave us eternal comfort and good hope through grace,
2Th 2:17 comfort your hearts and establish them in every good work and word.

Thank you so much for this post and hymn. (Sorry, I'm still getting caught up.)
I knew about the story of the Aucas through something else I did as an in-depth study online relating to a modern-day true crime case. It was chronicled for posterity by some of the people of Wycliffe, the Bible translators.
So interesting to find another nugget of faith and praise within the inspiring story. Thanks again.
2Co 4:1 Therefore, having this ministry by the mercy of God, we do not lose heart.
2Co 4:2 But we have renounced disgraceful, underhanded ways. We refuse to practice cunning or to tamper with God's word, but by the open statement of the truth we would commend ourselves to everyone's conscience in the sight of God.
2Co 4:3 And even if our gospel is veiled, it is veiled only to those who are perishing.
2Co 4:4 In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.
2Co 4:5 For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus' sake.
2Co 4:6 For God, who said, "Let light shine out of darkness," has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.

Holy Spirit, Truth divine,
Dawn upon this soul of mine;
Word of God and inward light
Wake my spirit, clear my sight.
Holy Spirit, Love divine,
Glow within this heart of mine;
Kindle every high desire;
Perish self in Thy pure fire.
Holy Spirit, Power divine
Fill and nerve this will of mine;
Grant that I may strongly live,
Bravely bear, and nobly strive.
Holy Spirit, Right divine,
King within my conscience reign;
Be my Lord, and I shall be
Firmly bound, forever free.
Holy Spirit, Peace divine,
Still this restless heart of mine;
Speak to calm this tossing sea,
Stayed in Thy tranquility.
Holy Spirit, Joy divine,
Gladden Thou this heart of mine;
In the desert ways I sing,
Spring, O Well, forever spring.
Now incline me to repent,
Let me now my sins lament,
Now my foul revolt deplore,
Weep, believe, and sin no more.
Oh Merciful Father in Heaven,
I want to earnestly thank you for Your Holy Spirit, without Whom I would not have been able to hear and believe your Word and receive your Salvation.
Even now, so many are perishing because your Gospel of Mercy and Redemption is hidden from their blinded eyes.
Have Mercy again and draw Them all to Jesus that they might believe and be Saved.
Thank you for your Holy Spirit Who enables me to see the beauty of your Creation and all the Joy I may still find in this fallen World, which is ever revealing your Goodness, and Kindness and Majesty in the design of your creatures and the beauty of your provision.
I pray that You would fill me again today, overflowing, with your Spirit that I might have the pure heart with which to see you.
I ask this in the Mighty Name of Jesus, who Loved us.
Amen.

Teach me, O Lord each morning, to see every single day,
The touch of your most perfect love upon life's weary way,
The touch of your supporting hand upon my weary life,
The touch of your unexpected peace that heals the deepest strife.
Teach me, O Lord, each morning to remember as I go
That you walked the way upon the earth, each step from heel to toe,
Dust and laughter along the way you've felt, the taste of joy and pain,
The burning of the summer sun, the blessing of the rain.
Teach me, O Lord each morning, that when you said "Come follow me,"
You knew that I could walk that way, no impossibility
Because you blazoned out the path, with hope and love and cross,
And walk it ever with me, in happiness or loss.
