Unless the LORD builds the house, those who build it labor in vain. Unless the LORD watches over the city, the watchman stays awake in vain.
Psalm 127:1>
At this time, when feelings run high, the world seems crazy, and anger seems to be the one thing the peoples of the world have in common, I invite you, my fellow FReepers, to join me in prayers and meditation for guidance, God's help and for our fellow man, for America, our troops, and all our own needs.
Sweet hour of prayer! sweet hour of prayer!
That calls me from a world of care,
And bids me at my Fathers throne
Make all my wants and wishes known.
In seasons of distress and grief,
My soul has often found relief
And oft escaped the tempters snare
By thy return, sweet hour of prayer!
William Bradbury
God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.
Therefore we will not fear though the earth should change,
though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea;
though its waters roar and foam,
though the mountains tremble with its tumult.
Psalm 46: 1-3

PRAYER TO SAINT JOSEPH FOR SELLING A HOUSE
O, Saint Joseph,
you who taught our Lord
the carpenter's trade,
and saw to it
that he was always properly housed,
hear my earnest plea.
I want you to help me now
as you helped your foster-child Jesus,
and as you have helped many others
in the matter of housing.
I wish to sell this house
quickly, easily, and profitably
and I implore you to grant my wish
by bringing me a good buyer,
one who is eager, compliant, and honest,
and by letting nothing impede the
rapid conclusion of the sale.
Dear Saint Joseph,
I know you would do this for me
out of the goodness of your heart
and in your own good time,
but my need is very great now
and so I must make you hurry
on my behalf.
[This part goes with burying the statue upside down, so you can pass it by if you want]
Saint Joseph, I am going to place you
in a difficult position
with your head in darkness
and you will suffer as our Lord suffered,
until this house is sold.
[Continuing, albeit still in reference to the statue - you could get a little card instead]
Then, Saint Joseph, I swear
before the cross and God Almighty,
that I will redeem you
and you will receive my gratitude
and a place of honour in my home.
Amen.
And some candlelight, too:

All praise to Thee, my God, this night,
For all the blessings of the light!
Keep me, O keep me, King of kings,
Beneath Thine own almighty wings.
Forgive me, Lord, for Thy dear Son,
The ill that I this day have done,
That with the world, myself, and Thee,
I, ere I sleep, at peace may be.
Teach me to live, that I may dread
The grave as little as my bed.
Teach me to die, that so I may
Rise glorious at the judgment day.
O may my soul on Thee repose,
And with sweet sleep mine eyelids close,
Sleep that may me more vigorous make
To serve my God when I awake.
When in the night I sleepless lie,
My soul with heavenly thoughts supply;
Let no ill dreams disturb my rest,
No powers of darkness me molest.
O when shall I, in endless day,
For ever chase dark sleep away,
And hymns divine with angels sing,
All praise to thee, eternal King?
Praise God, from Whom all blessings flow;
Praise Him, all creatures here below;
Praise Him above, ye heavenly host;
Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.
Psa 4:8 In peace I will both lie down and sleep; for you alone, O LORD, make me dwell in safety.
.........
Psa 3:4 I cried aloud to the LORD, and he answered me from his holy hill. Selah.
Psa 3:5 I lay down and slept; I woke again, for the LORD sustained me.
.........
Job 11:18 And you will feel secure, because there is hope; you will look around and take your rest in security.
Job 11:19 You will lie down, and none will make you afraid.....
......
Mat 11:28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
Precious Saviour who has Loved us so Deeply and so Joyfully, we love you.
Thank you for your abiding Love which holds us throughout the night in sweet peace.
We pray for those who are in difficulty and in trouble.
Show Mercy on the little ones and uphold those who sorrow in heart.
Provide for the needy in your perfect time with all graciousness.
Be our Light and Truth and Peace and Joy.
Psa 41:13 Blessed be the LORD God of Israel from everlasting, and to everlasting. Amen, and Amen.
Psa 72:18 Blessed be the LORD God, the God of Israel, who only doeth wondrous things.
Psa 113:2 Blessed be the name of the LORD from this time forth and for evermore.
Amen

This was a Blessing to my Soul Today:
Grace and Providence (by William Cowper)
Almighty King! whose wondrous hand
Supports the weight of sea and land;
Whose grace is such a boundless store,
No heart shall break that sighs for more.
Thy providence supplies my food,
And 'tis Thy blessing makes it good;
My soul is nourish'd by Thy Word,
Let soul and body praise the Lord!
My streams of outward comfort came
From Him who built this earthly frame;
Whate'er I want His bounty gives,
By whom my soul forever lives.
Either His hand preserves from pain,
Or, if I feel it, heals again;
From Satan's malice shields my breast,
Or overrules it for the best.
Forgive the song that falls so low
Beneath the gratitude I owe!
It means Thy praise: however poor,
An angel's song can do no more.
Our Master, we Love You, we Praise You; You are So Good! You have Granted us So Much; the Knowledge of You as our God, our Christ, our Only and All-Sufficient Savior. You have Plucked us from Destruction's Path, Placing within us Your Spirit of Grace. Our Redeemer, we Love You So, and Wish we were with Thee in Thy Home. To Behold Your Greatness, Your Awesome Splendor; to Behold our Beloved Who Holds our Very Heart. Our Glorious God, Who Fashions All Wonders, Who Creates the Beautiful Shells of the Sea! Who Gives us the Beautiful Birds and their Songs, we Long to Look Upon Thy Dear Face!
O Lord, how Manifold are Thy Works! In Wisdom hast Thou Made them All; the Earth is Full of Thy Riches! (Ps.104:24)

Thank you!
Thank you for that good post. This line in particular reminded me of a prayer I've offered up for my Dad, and used as an opportunity to actually read Scripture to him! From Proverbs 3 -
19 The LORD by wisdom founded the earth;You've blessed me this morning, bp7! And even with tears I've prayed these things again over my dad, so you've blessed him too (: Thank you for being joyfully obedient to Jesus Christ.
By understanding He established the heavens;
20 By His knowledge the depths were broken up,
And clouds drop down the dew.
21 My son, let them not depart from your eyes
Keep sound wisdom and discretion;
22 So they will be life to your soul
And grace to your neck.
23 Then you will walk safely in your way,
And your foot will not stumble.
24 When you lie down, you will not be afraid;
Yes, you will lie down and your sleep will be sweet.
25 Do not be afraid of sudden terror,
Nor of trouble from the wicked when it comes;
26 For the LORD will be your confidence,
And will keep your foot from being caught.
Praise and prayer bump!
The whole of your prayer, Kitty Mittens, was good and powerful; amen! These words in particular I shouted aloud!
Amen amen amen!

And Jesus went about all the cities and villages, teaching in their synagogues and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every disease and every infirmity. When he saw the crowds, he had compassion for them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.
Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; pray therefore the Lord of the harvest to send out laborers into his harvest."
Matthew 9: 35-38 RSV
Compassion -- to suffer with.
O Lord,
Emmanuel,
God with Us,
Who suffers with us,
Who feels our griefs,
Who knows our pains,
Who gifts us with his heart's own blood,
That we might know
That he knows,
That he understands,
That he cares,
That he loves.
O God with Us,
who knows the taste of frustration,
who knows how it feels to be misunderstood,
who knows the pangs of hunger,
who understands fear,
and sickness,
and sorrow
and pain.
O Lord, our Shepherd,
Open our hearts that we too might hunger
to share that compassion,
that suffering with our fellow man,
knowing as we do we suffer with you,
knowing as we do your work, we work with you,
knowing that as we give, we give to you.
O Lord,
make us the tools in your hand,
turn us into the workmen in your field,
the laborers for your harvest,
as you will,
in the way you will,
this day, and always.
Amen.
