Ten Worst Games of All Times[Video Games]

The Worst Game of All Time

1. E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial (Atari, 1982) Platform: Atari 2600

About a third of the people I quizzed came up with this title almost instantly, and it's not hard to see why. No matter how you rate it, E.T. was a misbegotten product that deserved to be buried. (And, as things turned out, it was. More on that in a minute.)

How, you may wonder, does someone screw up the one-two punch of the year's most popular movie and the number one video game console? Through a combination of poor planning and unbridled optimism. Warner Communications, then Atari's parent company, sealed the deal to make a video game adaptation of the blockbuster movie in the summer of 1982, aiming to have the cartridge out for the Christmas shopping season. (Remember the TV ad, with E.T. in a Santa outfit? No? You can refresh your memory.) The result was a severely compressed development schedule, giving programmer Howard Scott Warshaw a mere five weeks to pull the game together.

YES adventure was AWFUL!!!

!? Adventure was a great game. Warren Robinett pioneered the concept of having a multi-room universe in which things happen outside a person's vision and control. He is also probably the first programmer to hide a secret message in a video game (a programmer for the Channel F also put in messages, but from what I've heard he liked to show them off). Adventure is rather simplistic by modern standards (only about a dozen manipulable objects), but Warren Robinett's vision was far ahead of anyone else's (the only other game that comes close is Superman, which is built on the Adventure core written by Warren Robinett)

well, i guess the "concept" was good, but the technology to support the game just didn't do it for me.

I really like playing the PoP games, too. I wouldn't have put Warrior Within on that list.

Seanbaby's list is a lot better. Some of the same games, but much better writing.

Yeah, the 2600's Pacman was awful. I remember the hype too. I couldn't wait. One of my friends got it right away.

It blew.

Adventure had that secret room you could go into if you got the right items in the room... There was the secret dot in the castle you had to use the ladder to get... Hours and hours my brother and I played that game...

BTW... it made my top ten list above...
