George Allen in 2008?
FreeRepublic ^ | November 7, 2006 | NapkinUser

Does (almost certainly) losing the Virginia senate election give George Allen more time to campaign for 2008, like Romney and Frist both stepping down does?

Shhhh. I think there are still some Harris supporters hiding on islands like the Japanese in the Pacific.

Hailey already said he won't run in 2008. His name was bounced around a while ago.

LOL -- Allen is dead meat. Three months ago, he was going to coast to re-election, and he managed to p!$$ it away.

The 2008 nomination is Rudy's if he wants to fight for it.

Probably -- Allen was about the only credible electable candidate from the conservative side of the party.

I see your 20% and lower to 15% with a Keyes/Harris ticket.

Heck, why not go for broke: Keyes/Foley.

So does this same thinking apply to Santorum?

Of course it does -- Santorum got beat like a kettledrum. Who wants a LOSER to head their ticket?

It's a question of who can emerge as a credible advocate for fiscal discipline without all the scary social baggage.

If Allen can't defeat a guy who writes horrible porno, and can't win even with the whole "macaca" label, he's toast nationally. We don't need a "loser racist" on the ticket -and that's what people - unfortunately - are going to see him as.

I love Rick - but he would be better off in a cabinet or as a judge.

After waking up this morning, I reassessed 2008 a bit. I now think McCain was the big winner yesterday. A desperate GOP will look to him now as their savior. He'll probably become Senate Minority Leader, and will have an opportunity to win over his detractors in the party (whether he does or not, remains to be seen). He scored some points last week by immediately taking Kerry to task for his "botched" joke.

Rudy's stock dropped, because of his issues with his social liberalism, which will hurt him with the conservatives, and his too close association with President Bush, which will hurt him with those who will want a clean break from the Bush Presidency in 2008.

Romney's stock also rose too. The GOP is going to have a centrist as their nominee in 2008, that is for certain.

If we were going to lose the Senate anyway, I'm glad Chafee is gone.

The Republicans in Congress, must put aside their differences and rally around President Bush for the next two years. The future of the GOP literally depends on this. If they continue to attempt to distance themselves, the GOP is going to get run over by the Rats. They must stand united here.

I will second that sentiment :) Now is our time to unite like never before. We still have a chance to turn all of this around in 2008.

When all is said and done, I believe this will be President Bush's Finest Hour. Reagan's greatest accomplishments came with a Democratic Congress in power.

True. Maybe the Pres was saving up all his vetoes for now? I expect we're going to start seeing a lot more of that.

Nixon would have been remembered as a very good president had it not been for Watergate. And Vietnam would not have been overrun.

I'm not counting Romney out. But he's more unknown, and it has to be seen how he 'plays in Peoria'. McCain is too old and in questionable health, but after last night, I think the GOP will close ranks behind whoever wins the nomination - even McCain. The presidency assumes a MUCH larger significance in 2008 given the fact that the 'Rats will control Congress.

I agree that Guiliani and Romney would be good choices. I think it is between those two and McCain.
